A prominent professor at the University of Cambridge has been stripped of a prestigious college fellowship following an investigation that upheld multiple allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct. Herbert Huppert, an 82-year-old emeritus professor of geophysics, was excluded from King’s College in 2025 after complaints accused him of harassment, inappropriate touching, sexualised remarks and other unacceptable behaviour.

Huppert had held his fellowship at King’s College for approximately five decades, making his removal one of the most significant disciplinary actions involving a senior Cambridge academic in recent years. Sources familiar with the matter said concerns about his conduct had circulated within academic circles for years before formal action was ultimately taken.

At least two individuals are known to have reported concerns directly to college authorities. The allegations prompted an internal investigation, which reportedly concluded that the complaints against Huppert were substantiated. The case has intensified debate within British higher education over how universities handle allegations involving influential and long-serving academics.

The controversy also raised questions about earlier warnings surrounding Huppert’s behaviour. Cambridge had reportedly imposed “access restrictions” on him in 2018 following previous allegations related to misconduct. Despite those measures, he continued attending university functions and college events in subsequent years.

According to reports, Huppert later faced additional accusations involving the harassment of a female staff member during a formal dinner at Jesus College, further escalating concerns about whether sufficient safeguards had been enforced after the initial restrictions were introduced.

The case has added to growing scrutiny of institutional responses to sexual harassment allegations within elite academic institutions. Critics argue that universities have historically struggled to balance protecting reputations with ensuring accountability, particularly when allegations involve senior figures with long-established careers and influence within academia.

Neither King’s College nor Cambridge University publicly disclosed extensive details of the investigation, but the decision to revoke Huppert’s fellowship marks a rare and severe sanction against a distinguished academic at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. The developments are likely to intensify calls for stronger reporting systems and stricter enforcement measures to address misconduct within higher education institutions.
