Holy incompetence, Batman! In a plot twist that would make the Joker chuckle, Sri Lanka’s brave men in khaki are now requesting the public’s help to locate their very own boss—former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandhu Tennakoon. That’s right, folks! The very man once tasked with enforcing the law has seemingly decided to take a page from Carmen Sandiego’s playbook and disappear into thin air.
With all due respect, Commissioner Gordon never needed Gotham citizens to put up Wanted posters for him, but here we are, in a land where law enforcement’s most wanted is… law enforcement itself. If this isn’t a record-breaking moment of irony, I don’t know what is.

“With great power comes great responsibility,” said Uncle Ben. But perhaps in Deshabandhu’s case, it’s more like, “With great power comes great escape plans.” One minute, he’s Sri Lanka’s top cop, the next, he’s Houdini, executing an act so seamless that even the Riddler would be impressed.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Public Security, while his driver, Buruwa, standing behind the walls of the ministry, playing his role as the mysterious informant, has assured us that there is information on the whereabouts of both Deshabandhu and a missing woman. And yet, rather than acting on it, he cryptically suggests, “Tell them to stay like that.” Ah, the suspense!
One can almost picture this unfolding in a classic comic book frame:
- Panel 1: The police, standing helplessly.
- Panel 2: The Deputy Minister in a shadowy corner, whispering, “We know where he is.”
- Panel 3: A random citizen asking, “So… you’re gonna arrest him, right?”
- Panel 4: The Deputy Minister smirking like a budget Lex Luthor. “In a limited time… maybe.”
If this doesn’t feel like a low-budget DC spinoff, consider the fact that this might be the first case in the world where law enforcement is looking for their own chief after his suspension—thanks to a legal case filed by none other than The Cardinal and His Holy Clan. This reads like an unpublished Daredevil issue where the Church, the Cops, and the Criminals all end up in the same moral grey area.
And as if that wasn’t enough chaos, all of this is happening while the man currently in charge, the Acting IGP, is busy having a brawl with the constitutionally appointed Independent Police Commission. That’s right—Sri Lanka’s police leadership is in full-blown civil war mode. Who needs criminals when the law is fighting itself?
Speaking of detective work, have the police considered calling Scooby-Doo and the gang? Because at this point, all we need is a talking dog to unmask the ‘mysteriously missing’ IGP. “Jinkies! It was Deshabandhu all along!”
Maybe, just maybe, we should all turn to the great philosopher of crime-fighting, the Dark Knight himself: “The night is darkest just before the dawn.” And boy, are we in for a long night.
Until next time, keep your eyes peeled, folks. After all, it’s not every day that the police are looking for their own missing man. If you spot him, be a hero—call the authorities. Oh wait… they already know.
BAM! POW! SMACK! And the circus continues.
