The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has seized a large shipment of methamphetamine after intercepting a fishing trawler off the coast of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The operation, which took place on November 23 and 24, led to the arrest of six Myanmarese nationals and the recovery of 6,000 kg of contraband drugs.

According to officials, the Coast Guard’s Dornier aircraft, while on a routine patrol, detected suspicious movement from a fishing trawler near Barren Island, approximately 150 km from Port Blair. Upon identifying the vessel’s unusual activity, the aircraft pilot issued a warning, instructing the trawler to reduce its speed. The pilot also alerted the Andaman and Nicobar Command, prompting immediate action from the Coast Guard.

Fast-response patrolling vessels were deployed to intercept the trawler. On November 24, the vessel was towed to Port Blair for further investigation, and the six Myanmarese crew members aboard were taken into custody. Authorities discovered the drugs packed into 3,000 individual packets, each weighing 2 kg. The total value of the seized methamphetamine in the international market is estimated to be worth several crores of rupees.

The authorities suspect that the drugs were destined for the Indian market and its neighboring countries. A joint interrogation is set to take place with the Andaman and Nicobar Police to uncover more details about the operation and the individuals involved in the smuggling attempt.

This is not the first time that illegal narcotics have been seized in the waters near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Similar operations have taken place in 2019 and 2022, when foreign vessels were caught attempting to bring banned substances into Indian waters. The Coast Guard continues to maintain a vigilant presence in the region as part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and ensure maritime security.

Methamphetamine, a powerful stimulant known for its recreational and performance-enhancing effects, remains a significant concern for law enforcement agencies worldwide due to its potential for abuse and its widespread illicit distribution.
