Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for “sharing insights” from his recent summit with former US President Donald Trump in Alaska. Modi made the remarks on Monday in a post on X, emphasizing New Delhi’s longstanding call for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

Putin and Trump met in Anchorage on Friday in their first face-to-face encounter since 2018, with discussions focused primarily on ways to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Russian president described the talks as “frank” and “substantive,” while Trump characterized the meeting as “warm.”

In his post, Modi stated, “India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict” and expressed support for all efforts in that direction. He added, “I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come.”

India’s Ministry of External Affairs also welcomed the outcome of the Alaska summit on Saturday, reiterating that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward. The ministry echoed international calls for a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

The call between Putin and Modi came just hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several Western European leaders were scheduled to meet Trump at the White House on Monday.

Earlier this month, the US targeted India for its purchases of Russian oil. Since 2023, India has become the second-largest buyer of Russian crude after China. Trump had imposed a 25% duty on Indian exports as a penalty for importing Russian oil, in addition to a 25% blanket tariff on Indian goods introduced on July 31. These additional duties are expected to take effect on August 27.
