Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne (Retired), Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Cuba, along with staff members of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Havana, paid a courtesy visit to the Ché Guevara Center today. The visit highlighted the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between Sri Lanka and Cuba.
The delegation met with Mrs. Aleida March, the spouse of revolutionary leader Ché Guevara and Director of the Center, as well as Mrs. Aleida Guevara, the daughter of Ché Guevara. Also attending were Mr. Claudio Monzón, Deputy Director of Asia from Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a specialist on Asia.
As part of the visit, Ambassador Ulugetenne presented a Sinhalese translation of Young Ché, a biography of Ché Guevara authored by his father, Ernesto Lynch, and translated by Mr. Samarasinghe Gunasekara. The donation symbolizes Sri Lanka’s admiration for Cuba’s revolutionary history and its commitment to strengthening cultural and historical ties.
In a gesture of mutual respect, Mrs. Aleida March gifted two books on Ché Guevara to the Ambassador, emphasizing the shared commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of the revolutionary leader.
The visit also served as a reminder of Ché Guevara’s historic journey to Sri Lanka in 1959 as the first Cuban envoy after Sri Lanka officially recognized the revolutionary government of Cuba.
