Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital due to health complications, hospital officials confirmed today.
Dr. Pradeep Wijesinghe, Acting Director of the National Hospital, stated that initial tests conducted at the Prison Hospital revealed that Mr. Wickremesinghe is experiencing low sodium levels, elevated creatinine levels, and high blood pressure. Due to limited facilities at the Prison Hospital for further specialized tests, he was transferred to the National Hospital for advanced care.
“In view of his age and existing medical conditions, it has been decided to keep him under close medical supervision for the first 24 hours,” Dr. Wijesinghe said. “He has been moved from the Prison Hospital treatment unit to the Intensive Care Unit at the Colombo National Hospital and is receiving treatment under the supervision of our medical and nursing staff.”
High creatinine levels in the blood can indicate kidney dysfunction, as creatinine—a waste product of muscle metabolism—is normally filtered out by healthy kidneys. Elevated creatinine may also result from dehydration or severe muscle damage.
Low sodium levels, a condition known as hyponatremia, can cause swelling in the brain, leading to headaches, confusion, fainting, or loss of consciousness. It may also result in muscle cramps, weakness, and irregular heartbeat.
The National Hospital has assured that former President Wickremesinghe is being closely monitored and receiving appropriate care.
