Two of India’s wealthiest industrialists, Gautam Adani and Kumar Mangalam Birla, are locked in a high-stakes battle to dominate the nation’s booming cement market. Their aggressive expansion is setting the stage for potential price cuts and shake-ups, with smaller players poised to either sell or be squeezed out.
Birla’s UltraTech, the country’s largest cement manufacturer, recently ended a six-year acquisition hiatus with a flurry of buyouts, including a $697 million stake in India Cements. This move follows Adani’s dramatic 2022 entry into the cement sector, buying Holcim’s Indian business for $10.5 billion, making Adani Group the second-largest cement producer overnight. Both giants are now racing to expand their capacities, sparking what analysts have dubbed a “cement war.”
The fierce competition, fueled by India’s infrastructure drive, is expected to intensify as both Adani and Birla vie for the top spot, risking market volatility and pushing smaller rivals to the brink of survival.
