A powerful explosion rocked Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s largest commercial shipping facility, on Saturday, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 700, according to local media reports citing officials.

The cause of the blast, which sent a massive plume of smoke and debris into the air, remains unclear. Shahid Rajaee Port, located roughly 23 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas and north of the critical Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint for nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments — sustained significant structural damage. Multiple buildings were partially collapsed, and freight containers caught fire, authorities confirmed.

Videos posted online captured the terrifying moments, showing what appeared to be a smaller explosion triggering a larger blast, followed by walls of thick black smoke rising above the port. Some footage also depicted widespread destruction among the stacked freight containers and administrative facilities.

Iranian media outlets offered conflicting reports about the origin of the explosion. Some officials indicated it began with an incident in an administrative building, while others suggested a gas tanker explosion or a fire that erupted among the freight stockpiles.

“The source of this incident was the explosion of several containers stored in the Shahid Rajaee Port wharf area,” a local crisis management official said. “We are currently evacuating and transferring the injured to medical centers.”

Emergency crews and firefighters are still working to control the situation and assess the full extent of the damage. Authorities have launched an investigation but cautioned that it may take time before a definitive cause is determined.

The Shahid Rajaee Port is a vital hub for Iran’s economy, handling the majority of the country’s container traffic and serving as a gateway to international shipping routes. Disruptions at the port could have significant regional and global trade implications, particularly given its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.

Further updates are expected as officials continue rescue and recovery operations.
