Hours after Pakistan claimed it shot down five Indian fighter jets using Chinese-made PL-15E missiles in a fierce aerial skirmish over Kashmir, China’s state broadcaster CCTV re-aired footage of its fully automated missile production line — spotlighting the country’s growing push into robotic weapons manufacturing.
Originally broadcast in July last year, the footage shows advanced robotic arms on an unmanned assembly line seamlessly constructing PL-15E air-to-air missiles. The re-release on Thursday has been interpreted by Chinese analysts and netizens as a strategic signal — showcasing not only China’s sophisticated “intelligent manufacturing” capabilities but also the production scalability and affordability of its weapons systems for global export.
The PL-15E is the export version of China’s PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile, developed to outperform Western equivalents in both range and terminal engagement performance. With a maximum reach of 145km (90 miles) and advanced multiple ignition capabilities, the missile allows launching aircraft — like China’s J-10CE — to engage targets well before entering retaliatory range.
Pakistan’s reported use of the PL-15E comes amid heightened tensions in the Kashmir region. While details remain scarce and unverified independently, wreckage believed to be from the Chinese missile has reportedly been found at two impact sites, according to defense news outlet The War Zone.
The Chinese footage highlighted how its aerospace giant AVIC has transitioned to a 24-hour unmanned production process. “Once the materials are ready and the software is set, the process runs automatically without the need for human intervention,” said Yao Changhong, director at AVIC’s electric equipment division. The factory reportedly supports both small-batch and multi-variety missile manufacturing — a capability seen as key to rapid wartime production and export readiness.
“This is intelligent manufacturing,” added Lu Hongxun, AVIC’s chief skills expert. “We are now capable of 24-hour unmanned automation for our air-to-air missiles.”
The timing of the re-release raises questions about China’s broader intentions in the region. Some defense experts suggest it may serve as a subtle endorsement of Pakistan’s use of the PL-15E, while simultaneously promoting China’s capacity to meet rising international demand for high-tech, precision-guided weaponry.
With Pakistan’s use of the PL-15E now thrust into the spotlight, the incident underscores not only the growing strategic ties between Beijing and Islamabad but also the evolving nature of warfare — increasingly shaped by AI, automation, and transnational arms dynamics.
