US officials are reportedly exploring the possibility of offering Greenlanders lump sum cash payments to encourage the territory to break away from Denmark and potentially align more closely with the United States, according to sources cited by Reuters.

While the exact amounts under consideration remain unclear, some discussions reportedly include payments ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per person. The idea has been raised among White House aides and other US officials, signaling the lengths Washington may be willing to go to increase its influence in the Arctic.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has long been of strategic interest to the US due to its location and natural resources. Past US administrations have shown interest in expanding their presence on the island, with previous discussions even touching on outright purchases or military arrangements.

The proposal, if pursued, would mark an unprecedented use of direct cash incentives in modern geopolitics, raising questions about the legality, feasibility, and political consequences of attempting to sway the population of a foreign territory through financial means.

It remains unclear whether Greenlandic authorities or Denmark would respond to such proposals, and US officials have not confirmed any formal plan.
