The United States has deployed a fleet of F-16CJs carrying the new Angry Kitten electronic warfare pods in the region, a system hailed online as “the future of electronic warfare” for its ability to confuse enemy radar and missile systems. Developed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute, Angry Kitten uses Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) technology to detect, record, and manipulate radar signals, feeding false data back to disguise the location, speed, and trajectory of aircraft. The pods also incorporate machine learning to adapt to hostile radar networks, enhancing the system’s effectiveness in complex, contested environments.
Military analysts speculate that the pods could support Wild Weasel missions, a tactic where US aircraft deliberately enter enemy airspace to trigger radar systems and then neutralize them using AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles. This week, twelve F-16CJs from the South Carolina Air National Guard’s 169th Fighter Wing were observed crossing the Atlantic, reportedly carrying both Angry Kitten and HARM targeting pods, signaling a significant US readiness push in the Gulf.
Despite its sophistication, Angry Kitten is not invulnerable. The pods cannot spoof aircraft against traditional Infrared Search and Track sensors, which are standard on many Iranian air defense systems. Experts note that networks of radar receivers spread across multiple locations could triangulate the positions of aircraft even under jamming, while rapid frequency switching and unconventional radar waveforms can reduce the system’s effectiveness. Some of Iran’s newer radar units are reportedly designed with DRFM resistance, incorporating rapid frequency hopping and advanced algorithms to counter electronic attacks.
