A pair of the U.S. Air Force’s newest EA-37B Compass Call electronic warfare aircraft have crossed the Atlantic and landed at RAF Mildenhall in England, a move that could foreshadow their entry into the rapidly intensifying conflict in the Middle East. The jets, tracked by open-source flight monitoring tools under the callsigns AXIS41 and AXIS43, were photographed upon arrival, with details first reported by The War Zone.

While officials have not confirmed their next destination, the possibility that these aircraft could soon move into the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility has drawn significant attention. If deployed, it would likely mark the first operational use of the EA-37B, a platform designed to reshape modern warfare not through brute force alone, but by controlling the electromagnetic spectrum.

The EA-37B is intended to replace the aging EC-130H Compass Call fleet, which has dwindled to only a few operational aircraft. Two of these older planes are currently deployed in support of Operation Epic Fury in the Middle East. Unconfirmed reports suggest that some of these aircraft may have been damaged during a recent Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base, which also reportedly destroyed a U.S. E-3 airborne warning and control aircraft. If true, such losses could create an urgent need to deploy the EA-37B sooner than originally planned.

The War Zone notes that while one EA-37B had previously been sent to Europe earlier this year for familiarization purposes, it was not yet operational. The current movement of two aircraft, however, suggests a more serious operational intent, even as the U.S. Air Force’s 55th Wing and CENTCOM have declined to comment.

What sets the EA-37B apart is its ability to conduct standoff jamming operations, targeting enemy communications networks and air defense systems from a safe distance. In modern warfare, control of the electromagnetic spectrum is as important as control of land, sea, or air. By disrupting radar systems, severing communication links, and confusing enemy sensors, the aircraft can effectively blind and isolate adversaries.

This capability is especially relevant given the evolving threat environment. Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen have demonstrated that even improvised air defense systems can challenge advanced U.S. aircraft. Iran itself, despite suffering heavy losses from weeks of U.S. and Israeli strikes, retains sophisticated capabilities and has already shown it can threaten American and allied assets.

Beyond jamming, the EA-37B also provides intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support. It can detect, identify, and geolocate electronic emissions, allowing U.S. forces to locate enemy radar systems, communication nodes, and other critical targets. This information can guide precision strikes or support ground operations.

The broader strategic context underscores the importance of these aircraft. U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth described the coming days in the conflict with Iran as “decisive,” emphasizing that the United States maintains multiple options, including the potential for ground operations. He stressed the importance of unpredictability, noting that revealing too much about military intentions would only benefit adversaries.

At the same time, the United States faces logistical and political challenges. Several European allies, including France, Spain, and Italy, have imposed restrictions on U.S. military access to their airspace or bases for operations related to the conflict. These limitations highlight growing tensions within traditional alliances and could complicate the conduct of sustained military campaigns.

Meanwhile, the scale of ongoing operations in the region is extensive. According to senior U.S. officials, more than 11,000 targets inside Iran have been struck in the past month. These include missile facilities, underground storage sites, and other critical infrastructure. Some strikes have caused massive secondary explosions, suggesting that deeply buried weapon stockpiles were successfully hit.

Despite these setbacks, Iran continues to respond. Missile and drone attacks have targeted countries across the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Commercial shipping has also come under threat, with a recent drone strike setting an oil tanker ablaze in Dubai’s port. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy supplies, remains a point of tension, with Iran proposing new measures to control or restrict maritime traffic.

Intelligence assessments suggest that the sustained bombing campaign has severely disrupted Iran’s leadership and command structure. Dozens of senior officials have reportedly been killed, and those who remain face major challenges communicating securely or coordinating large-scale responses. Even so, Iran’s military and security forces remain operational, and the risk of further escalation persists.

In this environment, the potential deployment of the EA-37B carries significant implications. These aircraft are designed not only to support operations, but to shape the battlefield itself by denying adversaries the ability to communicate, coordinate, or respond effectively. Their presence could enhance the effectiveness of U.S. and allied forces while reducing the risks they face.

Whether the EA-37B will soon enter active combat remains uncertain. If it does, it will likely face a baptism by fire in one of the most complex and contested operational environments in the world. As The War Zone highlights, this could mark a defining moment for the platform and for the broader role of electronic warfare in modern conflict.
