Footage documenting a test of Israel’s Arrow 4 missile interceptor has surfaced online, drawing attention to the latest phase of development in the country’s long-range air defense capabilities. The video appeared publicly in December after being uploaded to a YouTube channel that tracks Israeli military developments, before later circulating on social media platforms, including a Persian-language account on X.
The test shown in the footage appears to have taken place in 2024, with reports indicating that the launch was carried out from the Palmachim airbase in southern Israel. About a week after the video appeared on the Israel Military Channel, it spread more widely online, raising questions about how the material entered the public domain. The short clip is accompanied by polished, marketing-style narration, suggesting it may have originally been intended for controlled or semi-public release.
Israel’s Defense Ministry has confirmed that the footage shows a test of the Arrow 4 interceptor, the most advanced variant of the Arrow missile defense system currently under joint development by Israel Aerospace Industries and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. The ministry rejected claims that the video represented a security breach, stating that similar material had previously been shown at conferences open to the public and that there was no concern over an information leak.
However, a review by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz found that the footage is not currently available on any official channel operated by Israel’s defense establishment or the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. This discrepancy has fueled speculation over whether the release was inadvertent or part of a quiet effort to showcase progress in the program at a sensitive moment.
The Arrow system is designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles and has been a cornerstone of Israel’s air defense architecture since its development began in the 1980s, toward the end of the Cold War. The program was launched under a bilateral agreement between Israel and the United States and has relied heavily on American funding. The system achieved its first operational interception in 2017, when it was used against a Syrian surface-to-air missile fired toward Israeli Air Force aircraft.
Development of the Arrow 4 interceptor also began in 2017, again with U.S. support. According to Israel Aerospace Industries CEO Boaz Levy, the company is nearing the start of serial production of the new missile. An official Missile Defense Agency document indicates that development of Arrow 4 is expected to be completed in 2026.
Currently, the Arrow system includes two operational variants that form part of Israel’s layered, or “onion,” air defense model. Arrow 3 is designed for exo-atmospheric interceptions, targeting threats outside the Earth’s atmosphere, while the older Arrow 2 intercepts ballistic missiles in the upper atmosphere. Arrow 4 is intended to replace Arrow 2, intercepting threats at slightly shorter ranges while incorporating more advanced capabilities.
Like Arrow 3, the new interceptor is expected to rely on kinetic impact rather than an explosive warhead to destroy incoming missiles. When its development began, many of the threats it was designed to counter were considered largely theoretical. Those threats have since become more tangible, particularly during recent rounds of confrontation with Iran.
Arrow 4 is intended to counter maneuvering hypersonic missiles as well as missiles equipped with multiple warheads or submunitions. During the 12-day war with Iran, three cluster-type missiles of this nature were fired at Israel, underscoring the evolving challenge faced by the country’s air defenses.
Arrow batteries played a central role during the most recent conflict. In November 2023, the system carried out its first known exo-atmospheric interception of a missile launched from Yemen. Subsequent fighting with Iran posed further tests, with Israel’s defense establishment stating that Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors, operating alongside U.S. THAAD batteries deployed in Israel, intercepted 86 percent of incoming threats during the fighting.
The scale and cost of missile defense operations during the conflict were significant. According to a July report by The Wall Street Journal, the United States used 150 THAAD interceptors during the war, roughly a quarter of the total missiles produced for the system. By comparison, the cost of a single Arrow 3 interceptor is estimated at about $3 million, around one quarter of the cost of a THAAD interceptor.
Beyond Israel, the Arrow system is now entering the international market. Since December, Israel is no longer the sole operator after the first Arrow battery was delivered to Germany under a deal worth approximately $3.5 billion, signed in 2023. In early 2026, the German Bundestag approved an expansion of the agreement, adding an estimated $3.1 billion.
In total, the Arrow agreement between Israel and Germany is expected to exceed $6.7 billion, making it the largest defense export deal in Israel’s history and cementing the Arrow system’s role as a central pillar not only of Israel’s defense, but of allied missile defense efforts in Europe.
