Chinese experts have presented a groundbreaking draft for a quantum-proof communication protocol at a recent international telecoms standards conference, marking a significant step toward safeguarding traditional encryption methods from the threats posed by quantum computers. Approved unanimously at the event in Stockholm, Sweden, the draft positions China as a leader in developing global standards for post-quantum cryptography.
The protocol, introduced earlier this month at the 47th meeting of the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6 working group, is designed to counter potential risks from quantum computers, which are expected to be powerful enough to break conventional encryption. Experts warn that as quantum technology advances, it may enable attackers to hack encrypted data now and decrypt it in the future, potentially exposing sensitive information worldwide. Zhang Lulu, a representative of the Chinese delegation, emphasized that the protocol provides crucial guidance for transitioning global communication networks to post-quantum security, enhancing protection against future quantum-based threats.
WAPI Alliance, a major Chinese industrial group focused on network security, has been a driving force behind this effort. The group, established in 2006, comprises over 20 prominent telecoms and technology companies. China Iwncomm, a key WAPI member, led the proposal, further solidifying China’s influence in global cyber standards.
Countries worldwide are ramping up efforts to address quantum security. China, for example, launched a dedicated working group in 2023 to accelerate research and foster industry consensus on quantum-proof cryptography. Similarly, the United States has called for nationwide adoption of post-quantum encryption by 2035, with an estimated investment of $7.1 billion over the coming decade.
