Former State Minister and leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, widely known as ‘Pilleyan’, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), official sources confirmed today.

While the authorities have not yet disclosed the reason for his arrest, the development comes amid fresh momentum in the ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.

Social media was abuzz with speculation following the arrest, with some posts claiming that Chandrakanthan is being questioned over alleged links to Zahran Hashim, the ringleader of the suicide bombers responsible for the deadly attacks.

The Easter Sunday attacks, which killed over 250 people and injured hundreds more, remain one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in Sri Lanka’s history. Investigations have spanned years and drawn intense public scrutiny.
