Whales Teach Each Other to Fish in Sophisticated Underwater Schools

A groundbreaking 20-year study reveals that North Pacific humpbacks pass on complex hunting skills, creating a form of cultural apprenticeship in the wild.

In the fjords of northern British Columbia, humpback whales execute one of nature’s most extraordinary cooperative hunting techniques: bubble-net feeding. A group of whales dives beneath a shoal of herring, with one creating spirals of bubbles to trap the fish while others coordinate the attack with precise underwater calls. Then, in a stunning display, the whales surge upward through the compacted prey, mouths wide open, seizing their meal. Individual whales can weigh up to 40 tonnes and measure nearly 19 metres, and hunts often involve 16 or more participants. Researchers liken one whale’s role in directing the operation to a conductor leading an orchestra, with acoustic signals dictating when to dive and lunge.

While bubble-net feeding has been observed for decades, new evidence from a two-decade-long study of the Kitimat fjord population demonstrates that this skill spreads socially rather than emerging independently in each individual. Certain whales accumulate knowledge and become highly skilled and sociable “teachers.” Young or inexperienced whales closely connected to these experts are far more likely to adopt the technique than those on the periphery of social networks. Researchers describe this as a cetacean apprenticeship system, where expertise and cooperation are deliberately passed down, much like traditions in human communities.

The implications extend beyond pure curiosity. Bubble-net feeding is rarely a solo act—over 90 percent of hunts require coordination—and the ability to cooperate can determine survival, particularly during periods of environmental stress. During the 2013–2015 North Pacific marine heatwave, known as “the Blob,” whales proficient in cooperative hunting fared significantly better, highlighting the adaptive advantage of shared knowledge. However, this cultural resilience may be vulnerable. As industrial shipping increases in the region, collisions with large, expert whales could disrupt the transmission of critical skills, potentially affecting the population more severely than the loss of less experienced individuals.

These findings challenge traditional wildlife management approaches, which often treat animals as interchangeable units. By revealing that whales have a form of culture and mentorship, the study suggests that conservation strategies must consider not just the number of animals but the knowledge and skills they carry, redefining how we understand and protect intelligent marine life.
