Researchers in Switzerland have discovered that beaver activity can turn stream corridors into net carbon sinks, drawing in more carbon than they release over the course of a year. Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber), reintroduced across Europe after centuries of near-extinction, may now play an unexpected role in mitigating climate change by sequestering greenhouse gases without expensive infrastructure.
The study, published March 18 in the journal Communications Earth and Environment and reported by Live Science, examined a half-mile-long stream in northern Switzerland that had been influenced by beavers since 2010. Before the animals’ arrival, the area functioned as a floodplain with many trees. After the beavers built dams and removed some of the canopy, smaller plants flourished, and the team measured carbon stored in water, sediments, biomass, and deadwood. They found that the beaver wetland sequestered between 108 and 146 tons of carbon per year, equivalent to the carbon emissions of 832 to 1,129 barrels of oil.
Lead author Lukas Hallberg of the University of Birmingham emphasized that while beavers are not a complete solution to climate change, they provide a durable, low-cost way for river landscapes to store carbon for decades. Across Switzerland’s floodplains suitable for beaver recolonization, the wetlands could offset 1.2% to 1.8% of the country’s annual carbon emissions. Experts note that the results may vary with local conditions such as climate, geology, and vegetation, but the findings underscore the value of working with natural processes.
Emily Fairfax, a wetland expert at the University of Minnesota not involved in the study, told Live Science that the research challenges common misconceptions about beavers. Rather than being a nuisance, the animals create durable carbon sinks and support ecosystem restoration. As beaver populations recover across Europe and North America, their role in carbon sequestration and ecological resilience may prove increasingly significant, offering a powerful, low-cost tool in the fight against climate change.
