Private companies are increasingly focusing on microreactors, compact nuclear reactors designed to revolutionize power generation, particularly in remote or off-grid locations. This push to develop small reactors is gaining momentum as companies like Westinghouse lead the race, with a clear goal to shrink reactors to the size of shipping containers. Their aim is to offer a zero-carbon alternative to diesel and gas generators used in industries ranging from data centers to offshore oil platforms.
According to The Financial Times research, the nuclear industry is enjoying a resurgence as governments and corporations pursue clean energy solutions to meet their climate commitments. As part of this drive, the industry is focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs), and even smaller microreactors, like Westinghouse’s eVinci model, which can produce up to 20 megawatts of power. These microreactors are designed to operate autonomously, with no need for on-site workers, running for several years before being refueled.
In December 2024, Westinghouse’s eVinci microreactor secured approval from US nuclear regulators for a control system that will enable it to be operated remotely, marking a significant milestone for the development of microreactor technology. The company has already filed for tests of the eVinci at the Idaho National Laboratory, with plans to secure a commercial license by 2029.
This growing interest in microreactors is not just a response to global decarbonization goals; it’s also driven by the unique applications that these reactors could serve. As The Financial Times points out, companies such as Westinghouse are particularly interested in data centers, oil and gas platforms, and remote mining operations as key target markets. The eVinci reactor could provide a sustainable energy source in these environments, where reliance on diesel is both costly and carbon-intensive.
Despite these opportunities, challenges remain. The regulation of microreactors, especially when it comes to safety, transportation, and cybersecurity, is an area of ongoing concern. As The Financial Times highlights, regulators have yet to fully develop rules governing the operation and security of microreactors, which could become prime targets for cyberattacks or fuel theft.
Even so, companies like Westinghouse and BWX Technologies are pushing forward, hopeful that scaling up production will make microreactors cost-competitive in the long term. While microreactors are unlikely to compete with grid-scale energy solutions, they could offer a compelling solution for remote locations, where traditional energy costs are prohibitive.
