My Take
Frankopan places considerable focus on how human activities have accelerated environmental transformations, particularly within the Anthropocene—the geological epoch characterized by humans’ substantial impact on Earth’s ecosystems. While he recognizes human involvement in these changes, he refrains from placing singular blame on climate change alone. Instead, he offers a layered analysis that integrates both natural forces and human decisions.
In discussing the Anthropocene, Frankopan highlights how industrial development, resource extraction, urban sprawl, deforestation, and the exploitation of natural resources, especially from the 18th century onward, have greatly exacerbated today’s environmental crisis. Nevertheless, he extends these environmental impacts to earlier times, suggesting that even ancient societies, through agriculture, land alterations, and empire-building, began affecting ecosystems and instigating long-term changes.
Frankopan’s viewpoint avoids moral judgment, focusing more on how environmental pressures have built up over time, culminating in the present crisis.
