A secretive biotech venture is quietly advancing a plan for “brainless human clones,” raising profound ethical and scientific questions about the future of life extension

For years, a little-known startup operating out of Richmond, California remained largely invisible, quietly pursuing experimental biotechnology with ambitious goals. That changed abruptly when the company, R3 Bio, stepped into the public eye, announcing funding to develop nonsentient monkey “organ sacks” intended to replace animal testing. But as reporting from MIT Technology Review reveals, this announcement only scratches the surface of a far more controversial vision—one involving the creation of brainless human clones as backup bodies.

According to documents, presentations, and interviews uncovered by the publication, R3’s founder, John Schloendorn, has privately outlined a radical concept he calls “full body replacement.” The idea is as unsettling as it is ambitious: to grow human clones lacking higher brain function, which could serve as a source of transplantable organs—or even entire replacement bodies. In its most extreme form, the concept extends to the possibility of transplanting a person’s brain into a younger cloned body, effectively offering a second lifespan.

Such ideas have largely been confined to science fiction, but insiders say they are being discussed seriously within a small circle of life-extension enthusiasts and investors. These individuals, some of whom have poured money into R3, believe that extending human life dramatically—or even indefinitely—may ultimately depend on replacing aging biological components rather than repairing them.

Publicly, R3 has denied pursuing human cloning or creating altered humans. In statements, the company insists that allegations of plans for “non-sentient human clones” are categorically false. Yet the topic continues to surface in private forums and elite gatherings. At a high-priced longevity conference in Boston organized by Peter Diamandis, Schloendorn and his collaborator Alice Gilman reportedly presented a session titled “Full Body Replacement,” where cloning and organ generation were discussed behind closed doors.

The core premise behind these proposals is rooted in a controversial interpretation of biology. Schloendorn has pointed to rare medical conditions such as hydranencephaly—where individuals are born without much of the brain’s cerebral hemispheres—as evidence that a human body can survive with minimal neural function. If a body could be grown without the capacity for consciousness, proponents argue, it might be ethically permissible to use it as a source of organs.

This line of reasoning has alarmed many scientists and ethicists. Jose Cibelli of Michigan State University described the idea as crossing a fundamental boundary. Creating a human-like organism specifically designed to lack consciousness, he argued, raises profound questions about safety, morality, and the definition of humanity itself.

Technically, the concept builds on decades of cloning research that began with Dolly the sheep in 1996. Since then, scientists have successfully cloned a variety of animals, including primates. But the process remains inefficient and risky, often resulting in deformities, failed pregnancies, or early death. These challenges have prevented any confirmed attempts at human cloning.

R3’s approach seeks to invert the traditional goal of cloning. Instead of trying to produce a healthy individual, the aim would be to create a body that is biologically functional but neurologically limited. Because such a body would share the DNA of the original person, its organs would be nearly perfect matches, potentially eliminating the risk of rejection in transplants.

Investors drawn to this vision include high-profile figures like Tim Draper and groups such as Immortal Dragons, which focus on speculative longevity technologies. Yet even some backers have expressed skepticism. Boyang Wang, head of Immortal Dragons, has acknowledged that whole-body transplantation remains “very infeasible” with current science, describing it as distant from any realistic application.

Despite these doubts, the broader ecosystem around R3 suggests growing interest in radical life-extension strategies. A parallel startup, Kind Biotechnology, is exploring similar ideas through genetic engineering, aiming to create animals that lack the capacity to feel or think while producing transplantable organs. Using gene-editing tools like CRISPR, researchers have already demonstrated the ability to suppress brain development in animal embryos, raising the possibility of scaling such techniques.

The scientific community remains deeply divided. Some researchers see potential in developing ethically acceptable ways to address the global organ shortage, which claims thousands of lives each year. Others warn that moving toward whole-body cloning introduces unnecessary risks and ethical dilemmas. George Church of Harvard University has argued that creating entire bodies is both impractical and excessive, given that most patients need only a single organ transplant.

Beyond the technical hurdles, the ethical concerns are formidable. Determining whether a “brainless” organism truly lacks consciousness is far from straightforward. Some evidence suggests that even the brain stem can support a rudimentary form of awareness. If that is the case, harvesting organs from such entities could constitute a form of harm, undermining the very premise that makes the concept ethically defensible.

There are also practical barriers. Human cloning is illegal in many countries, and the process would likely require surrogate pregnancies, raising further ethical and social challenges. Convincing individuals to carry such pregnancies, critics note, could prove nearly impossible.

Yet within certain circles, the idea continues to gain traction. Advocates of a philosophy known as Vitalism argue that society should prioritize technologies capable of dramatically extending human lifespan. For them, body replacement represents a logical next step—an engineering solution to the biological limits of aging.

Even so, the concept remains difficult to discuss openly. Among investors and researchers, there is a widespread belief that public reaction could be overwhelmingly negative. Some proponents have suggested introducing the idea gradually, starting with less controversial applications like organ generation before advancing toward full-body cloning.

For now, there is no evidence that R3—or any other company—has created a brainless human clone. The technology required to do so remains speculative, and the obstacles are immense. But the mere existence of serious efforts to explore such possibilities marks a turning point in the intersection of biotechnology and ambition.

Whether these ideas ultimately lead to breakthroughs or backlash, they are forcing a confrontation with some of the deepest questions in science and ethics: What defines a human being? Where should the boundaries of innovation lie? And how far are we willing to go in the pursuit of longer life?

As the research progresses, one thing is clear. The future envisioned by these startups is no longer confined to fiction. It is being quietly drafted in laboratories, investor meetings, and private presentations—waiting, perhaps uneasily, for the world to catch up.
