WhatsApp Users in Italy Hacked, Authorities Say

At least seven mobile subscribers in Italy have been targeted by spyware through their use of the WhatsApp messaging platform, a subsidiary of U.S.-based Meta Platforms, authorities said on Wednesday.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has tasked the National Cybersecurity Agency with investigating the matter, her office said in a statement.

At least two of the seven affected individuals — including a journalist and the founder of a humanitarian group — have publicly commented on the situation.

Meloni’s office said that WhatsApp users in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, among others had also been targeted.
