Microsoft Corp.’s Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella this week became the latest tech leader to visit India, joining a growing procession of executives seeking to tap the country’s massive market and leverage its population as a testing ground for AI technologies, Bloomberg reported. The visits underscore India’s growing role as a global hub for artificial intelligence, data-driven services, and talent development.
With nearly one billion internet users, India represents a vast potential customer base. Tech giants are pledging tens of billions of dollars to build out AI infrastructure in the country. Amazon.com Inc. recently announced plans to invest $12.7 billion in cloud and AI systems by 2030, while OpenAI Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google are preparing investments in Indian data centers only rivaled by their domestic operations in the United States. During his last visit in January, Nadella committed $3 billion over two years, and this visit is expected to include meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as Indian business leaders and entrepreneurs. High-profile executives from Nvidia Corp., Google DeepMind, and Anthropic PBC are also scheduled to visit in the coming months.
“They’re coming to create a bank of users to improve their products and services,” said Ronnie Screwvala, an AI investor and co-founder of education tech startup UpGrad. “India is becoming the proving ground for the AI economy.” Companies are offering premium AI services at scale to capture the attention of young, globally connected users. Microsoft is providing students with free access to its AI assistant Copilot, OpenAI offers a one-year free subscription to ChatGPT Go, and Google, via telecom giant Reliance Jio, is distributing 18 months of its Gemini 2.5 Pro subscription—valued at nearly $400—to half a billion subscribers. Competitors such as Perplexity are embedding premium AI tools across devices used by Airtel customers.
The impact on daily life is already visible. Twenty-four-year-old MBA student Siddhant Sharma relies on OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini to write research papers, practice mock interviews, and create social media content. Millions of graduates fluent in machine learning and data science enter the workforce each year, providing a talent pipeline that allows companies like Microsoft and Google to build, test, and refine AI applications competitively. OpenAI and Anthropic are following this trend by opening offices in India and aggressively hiring local talent.
India’s 1,700 global capability centers (GCCs) are evolving from cost-arbitrage outposts into AI innovation hubs. These centers are increasingly engaged in LLM development, product engineering, semiconductor design, and generative AI applications. The sector is projected to add 1.3 million new roles by 2030, reaching a total of 3.46 million jobs, according to NLB Services, a global talent solutions provider. Roles such as AI governance architects and AI risk strategists are expected to drive an 11% increase in hiring next year. Recent entrants into India’s GCC ecosystem include Costco Wholesale Corp., Vanguard Group Inc., and Infineon Technologies AG. Cohesity Inc., an AI-focused data security and management startup, recently opened a new R&D center in Bangalore.
“There’s tremendous ready-made talent available in India that’s college-trained in machine learning and AI,” said Sanjay Poonen, CEO of Cohesity. “India is no longer the world’s back office,” Screwvala added. “The future of artificial intelligence will be tested, refined and unleashed from here.”
Nadella’s visit highlights the strategic importance of India in the global AI race, not only as a market for consumer services but as a critical hub for talent, innovation, and large-scale AI infrastructure deployment. Bloomberg reporting emphasizes that India is poised to become a central node in shaping the future of artificial intelligence worldwide, as tech giants continue to expand their presence and investments.
