China’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation (Comac) is set to display its full product line, including its flagship narrowbody airliner, the C919, at the Singapore Airshow, which begins Tuesday and runs for six days. The move signals Beijing’s intent to broaden Comac’s presence in Southeast Asia, a market traditionally dominated by Boeing and Airbus.
According to aviation analyst Li Hanming, Comac has positioned a C919 at the expo, and sources confirm that the aircraft will perform a demonstration flight, following its overseas debut at the same event two years ago. While Airbus will primarily showcase its A350 widebody series and Boeing will limit displays to ground exhibits, the C919 may be the only single-aisle jet to participate in the fly-by this year.
Comac executives are expected to meet civil aviation regulators from ASEAN member states during the show, using the platform to promote both the C919 and the company’s regional jet, the C909. The C909 is already operating routes in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam, and Brunei’s adoption of China’s civil aviation standards last October has eased the entry of Comac aircraft into the region.
The company hosted a forum on Asia-Pacific industrial cooperation in Singapore on Monday, outlining plans to expand its support network and strengthen partnerships with potential customers. While Southeast Asian airlines have been cautious about new aircraft types, analysts note that carriers with partial government ownership may be more inclined to purchase Comac planes as part of broader trade agreements with China.
Since its commercial debut in China in May 2023, the C919 has been on back order with China’s three largest airlines, though no Southeast Asian carriers have yet purchased or leased the jet. Observers say Comac’s growing reputation for safety, combined with competitive pricing, could encourage regional adoption and potentially lower fares for travelers.
The Singapore Airshow will be closely watched to see whether Comac can secure breakthrough orders in the region, a key step in its long-term strategy to compete with Boeing and Airbus in the lucrative single-aisle jet market.
