Adani Group is exploring the possibility of building nuclear energy plants to power its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence data center ambitions, signaling how sharply rising digital demand is reshaping India’s energy and infrastructure landscape.
According to Nikkei Asia, the Indian conglomerate is considering significant investments to scale up its data center portfolio and sees nuclear power as a potential long-term solution to meet soaring electricity needs. The company said any move into nuclear energy would be closely tied to industry demand, with Adani building and owning the plants while outsourcing the reactor technology.
“Data centers is very, very big. What we had assumed we would do in 2030, we have already crossed, and the amount of demand that’s coming in keeps rising,” Jeet Adani, director of Adani Digital Labs, told Nikkei Asia, highlighting how AI-driven workloads are accelerating capacity requirements far faster than anticipated.
Earlier this month, Adani Group announced plans to invest up to $5 billion in a Google data center campus in Visakhapatnam, in southern India, underscoring its growing partnership with global technology firms. The group is targeting the development of AI-focused data centers with more than one gigawatt of capacity across multiple Indian cities, including Visakhapatnam, Navi Mumbai, Noida and Hyderabad.
To support these facilities, Adani said it is also prepared to draw on its vast renewable energy resources. Its subsidiary, Adani Green Energy, is India’s largest renewable power producer, with more than 16.5 gigawatts of operational capacity. The group says this gives it the ability to supply large volumes of clean electricity to hyperscalers while rapidly building supporting infrastructure in a modular fashion.
“We have the ability to give as much renewable electricity as any of the hyperscalers would want,” Adani said. “We have the ability to develop infrastructure fast, and develop it modularly.”
India’s data center market is expanding far more quickly than its existing capacity. Industry data from DC Byte show that as of April 2025, the country had just 1.2 gigawatts of live data center capacity, compared with 7.7 gigawatts under construction, committed or in early development stages. Projects still in early phases account for about 57 percent of the total pipeline, highlighting the scale of anticipated growth.
Jeet Adani said India could attract massive investment from global technology companies if it moves decisively. “If India plays its cards right, it can easily convince the hyperscalers to build 10 gigawatts of data center capacity in the next five years,” he said, adding that data centers alone could drive demand for as much as 50 gigawatts of renewable electricity in the country.
