In an extraordinary discovery that has sent ripples through Sri Lanka’s ornithological community, the African Black Heron (Egretta ardesiaca) was sighted for the first time in the country on March 27, 2026. The bird, native to Africa and Madagascar, was observed in a wetland near the Panay-Kayts causeway connecting Jaffna to Kyats Island. The sighting was made by a team of seven dedicated birdwatchers, combining both expert knowledge and local field experience, including Milinda Ranasinghe, Vajira Gunasekara, Krishantha Pathinayake, Nirmala Silva, Gaston Bastians, Chandima Jayaweera, and Sam Kasir.
Vajira Gunasekara, a veteran wildlife photographer and long-time bird enthusiast, described the moment in an interview with Divaina-Sobasara. “I noticed a bird unlike any heron we typically record in Sri Lanka,” he said. “Its entirely black plumage and bright yellow feet immediately set it apart, and its unique feeding behavior confirmed that this was indeed a Black Heron.” Gunasekara and his team had been conducting a regular bird study tour of the Jaffna Lagoon, a rich aquatic ecosystem that supports a wide variety of waterfowl, when the bird’s sudden appearance captured their attention.
The African Black Heron is known for its extraordinary hunting technique, often referred to as the “umbrella feeding technique.” Unlike other herons and egrets, it spreads its wings forward and curves them over its head, forming a striking umbrella-like canopy. This creates a shadow on the water that attracts small fish seeking cover from direct sunlight. At the same time, the shadow reduces water reflection, allowing the heron to clearly spot prey. Observers reported that the bird repeatedly used this technique with precision, catching fish swiftly and efficiently, demonstrating both instinctive skill and adaptation to its temporary environment.
The discovery is particularly significant because the African Black Heron has never before been recorded in Sri Lanka, and its presence raises intriguing questions about avian migration and ecological dynamics. Ornithologists note that while herons and egrets are generally widespread, the sudden appearance of a species native to a completely different continent is unusual. The Jaffna Lagoon, with its mix of shallow waters, abundant fish, and quiet inlets, provided an ideal habitat for the visiting bird, allowing it to employ its characteristic feeding behavior.
Photographic and video documentation by the observation team played a critical role in identifying the species. The Black Heron’s black plumage, bright yellow feet, and distinctive feeding posture distinguished it from other herons commonly found in Sri Lanka, such as the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) or the Indian Pond Heron (Ardeola grayii). According to Gunasekara, these visual records will form the basis of a formal report and scientific paper, which the team plans to submit to the Sri Lanka Bird Records Committee for review.
Despite the excitement surrounding the discovery, the observation team emphasized that the sighting is still classified as “unconfirmed” pending further investigation. The Sri Lanka Bird Records Committee, responsible for verifying rare or unusual sightings, will conduct a thorough review before the Black Heron can be officially added to the country’s checklist of avian species. “While the initial observations are compelling, scientific confirmation requires careful scrutiny,” Gunasekara explained. He also noted that the forthcoming report will provide detailed evidence of the bird’s behavior, plumage characteristics, and ecological context, contributing valuable information to both local and global ornithology.
Experts suggest that such unexpected sightings could signal broader ecological or environmental shifts. Migratory birds occasionally stray outside their usual ranges due to changes in climate, habitat availability, or food resources. The Black Heron’s presence in Sri Lanka might reflect subtle alterations in regional water systems or broader patterns in migratory behavior that are not yet fully understood. The observation adds to a growing body of evidence showing how interconnected global ecosystems are and how species distribution can be influenced by both natural and human-induced factors.
The sighting has also sparked enthusiasm among the local birdwatching community. Milinda Ranasinghe and other team members have expressed their excitement at contributing to a potential new chapter in Sri Lanka’s ornithological history. “Discovering a species previously unknown in our country is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Ranasinghe said. “It reminds us of the richness of our natural habitats and the surprises that still lie in wait for those who explore them carefully.”
The Panay-Kayts wetland, where the Black Heron was observed, has long been recognized as a haven for waterbirds, supporting a variety of species including herons, egrets, terns, and migratory ducks.
