In a groundbreaking study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers have discovered that apes, specifically bonobos, can recognize when humans are unaware of key information and actively fill in the gaps. This finding challenges the long-held belief that the ability to intuit another’s ignorance is a trait unique to humans, as detailed in a recent report from The Times UK.
The research, led by Chris Krupenye, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences at Johns Hopkins University, suggests that bonobos have a natural instinct to point out what others may not know, especially if it benefits them — in this case, when a treat is involved. During the experiment, the bonobos demonstrated an intriguing ability to identify when a human was ignorant of something and would help by pointing to the correct location of a hidden treat.
In one scenario, a treat was placed under one of three cups in full view of both the bonobo and the human. The bonobos observed that the human could clearly see where the treat was hidden and patiently waited for the person to retrieve it. Interestingly, when the human asked, “Where’s the grape?” the bonobo remained still, recognizing that the human did not need assistance. However, in another setup, where a screen was placed between the bonobo and the human, obscuring the human’s view of the cups, the bonobo would eagerly point to the correct cup when asked the same question.
Chris Krupenye, a co-author of the study, noted, “It was clear what they were trying to communicate. One bonobo, Kanzi, was very food motivated and would tap repeatedly to get our attention, quite insistent in his efforts.” This behavior, the researchers say, reveals that bonobos not only understand the location of the food, but also recognize when their human counterpart lacks the necessary information.
The study marks the first evidence of apes communicating information based on an understanding of another’s ignorance, an ability once thought to be a uniquely human trait. The Times UK highlights that this research provides a deeper insight into the mental faculties shared by humans and apes, suggesting that these abilities may have evolved millions of years ago in their common ancestors.
This discovery aligns with observations in the wild, where chimpanzees, for example, make noise to warn companions of potential threats, such as approaching snakes, indicating an understanding of when a groupmate is unaware of danger.
Krupenye emphasized that the ability to recognize gaps in one another’s knowledge is fundamental to our sophisticated social behaviors, such as cooperation, communication, and strategic teamwork. “This work demonstrates the rich mental foundations that humans and other apes share,” he said, underscoring the complex cognitive abilities of apes and their potential to help us understand the evolutionary origins of human social intelligence.
