Family Conflict Tragedy Ends in Rail Suicide Near Colombo

Young woman leaves letter before jumping onto train at Dehiwala as police investigate circumstances of death

A 22-year-old woman died by suicide after jumping in front of a train near the Dehiwala railway station yesterday (04), with police stating that she had been unable to cope with constant conflict between her parents. According to Dehiwala Police, the woman had written a letter at her home prior to the incident.

The deceased was identified as a resident of Dippitigoda, Kelaniya. Police investigations revealed that she had left her home in Kelaniya on a motorcycle belonging to the family before traveling to the Dehiwala area, where the fatal incident occurred on the railway line.

An inquest into the death was conducted yesterday before Justice of the Peace Bandula Jayasinghe, the Coroner of the Kalubowila South Colombo Teaching Hospital. The letter written by the young woman was produced before the coroner as part of the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The post-mortem examination was carried out by the Judicial Medical Officer of the Kalubowila South Colombo Teaching Hospital, Dr. F.N.R.O. Supriyani. Medical findings are expected to assist investigators in confirming the cause of death and ruling out any other contributing factors.

Further investigations are being conducted by Police Sergeant Kumara (78142) under the supervision and instructions of the Officer-in-Charge of Dehiwala Police, Chief Inspector Anuradha Herath. Police said inquiries are continuing to establish a full account of the events leading up to the incident.
