Recent research using MRI scans has revealed that babies as young as one year old are capable of forming memories, offering new insight into the mystery of infantile amnesia—the inability to recall the earliest years of life. A study published in Science suggests that rather than babies being unable to form memories, the challenge lies in adults’ inability to retrieve them.
The study, conducted by a team of researchers led by neuroscientists from Columbia University, involved scanning the brains of 26 children aged 4 months to 2 years while they performed a memory task. The results showed that the greater the activity in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for storing memories, the longer the babies would look at a familiar image. This suggests that even at such a young age, infants are capable of encoding memories. Notably, the strongest signals were found in the posterior part of the hippocampus, a region known to play a significant role in memory recall in adults.
While the research supports the idea that the hippocampus is functional in early childhood, it also highlights a key factor: adults’ inability to access these early memories. According to co-author Tristan Yates, this could be due to a mismatch between how memories were initially stored and the cues used by the brain to retrieve them later in life.
In a related development, studies in rats, including a 2016 experiment involving optogenetics, showed that memories formed during infancy could persist into adulthood. These findings support the idea that memories from early childhood can remain intact in the brain, even if we cannot consciously access them.
The work, which was applauded by experts such as Amy Milton, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge, has profound implications for understanding memory. Milton notes that the study provides valuable evidence that the infant brain’s hippocampus is indeed capable of episodic memory encoding, furthering our understanding of how memory works in early life.
This breakthrough builds on previous research and could offer future insights into memory-related conditions. Although the study was published in Science, similar studies and discussions have been featured in prominent journals like Nature, which have long explored the complexities of memory formation in early life. This new study pushes the boundaries of our understanding and sheds light on why we can’t remember our earliest years despite the fact that those memories may still exist in our brains.
