Google has dominated the search engine market for decades, but in the age of artificial intelligence, it seems the tech giant might be struggling to keep up with more nimble competitors like OpenAI. For years, Google has reigned supreme, but recent developments in AI, especially OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have raised questions about whether Google’s reliance on its legacy search model is preventing it from innovating.
As Will Heaven, senior editor for AI at MIT Technology Review, pointed out, many of the major players in AI are converging on similar approaches, focusing on agents, deep research, and lightweight model versions. While it makes sense for companies to tackle similar challenges, Heaven’s observation suggests that this uniformity could be a sign of a lack of imagination. Google’s latest attempts to integrate AI into its search engine only seem to confirm this, as the company has been playing catch-up to OpenAI.
For example, in March 2025, Google introduced a new feature called AI Mode, designed to enhance the search experience by offering deeper, more personalized responses. However, this feature seems more like a reaction to what OpenAI’s ChatGPT has already been offering for months. Google’s AI Mode builds on its previous “AI Overviews,” but with enhanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities. It feels like a natural progression, but it begs the question: why wasn’t this feature available sooner, especially when OpenAI’s ChatGPT has already established such functionality?
Additionally, Google added search history to its Gemini chatbot, promising a more personalized experience. However, much of this feels like an attempt to catch up rather than lead. Google’s personalization efforts—while useful—still lag behind the sophistication of OpenAI’s offerings. As MIT Technology Review pointed out, despite Google’s vast data troves, its AI responses still lack the depth and nuance that ChatGPT has demonstrated. For example, ChatGPT can use past interactions to craft thoughtful and insightful profiles of users, recognizing personal preferences like music or film genres in ways that Google’s offerings have yet to replicate.
Moreover, as OpenAI’s executives have noted, their ability to innovate without the burden of a massive legacy business gives them an edge over companies like Google, which is encumbered by its traditional search revenue model. While Google’s vast user base and resources give it a significant advantage, its reliance on traditional search for revenue might limit its ability to push boundaries in the rapidly evolving field of AI.
Despite the challenges, Google still holds immense power with its search engine and cloud services, and it remains a dominant force in AI research through its DeepMind division. However, unless the company can innovate faster and take the lead in AI-driven search, it risks becoming a follower rather than a leader in the next phase of technology. The question remains: Can Google keep up, or will it continue to trail behind as the market shifts toward more innovative AI-driven solutions, like those from OpenAI?
