This week, scientists gathered in Manchester for a conference on aging to share groundbreaking research aimed at understanding the biological mechanisms that drive aging and age-related diseases. Experts presented studies that investigate the process at the molecular level, in hopes of one day slowing or preventing illnesses that typically accompany old age. The discussions, however, stood in stark contrast to remarks made by world leaders earlier this week, highlighting the gap between scientific inquiry and political ambition.

In a livestreamed event, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed extending human life through biotechnology. Xi stated that at 70 years old, one is still a child, while Putin suggested that advancements in science could allow continuous organ transplantation, potentially enabling people to live younger and younger and even achieve immortality. These bold statements, though dramatic, oversimplify the complex biological processes involved in aging. Scientists argue that repeated organ replacements, while theoretically beneficial, are unlikely to provide radical life extension in the foreseeable future.

Despite the sensational claims, research into organ replacement therapies is actively progressing. The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and other institutions are investigating both biological and synthetic approaches to repairing or replacing worn-out organs. MTI Technology Review reports that some teams have already trialed bioengineered organs in humans, and scientists are exploring ways to seed lab-grown scaffolds with cells or inject stem cells to repair damaged tissues. Early trials using collagen scaffolds to create bladder-shaped organs showed promise, yet the complexity of replacing entire organs remains a significant challenge.

Experts caution that while organ replacement offers hope, its limitations are profound. Transplant surgery requires major operations, immune suppression therapies, and lifelong medication, and donor organs are scarce. Research led by Jesse Poganik at Brigham and Women’s Hospital emphasizes that such surgeries, though lifesaving, come with risks—including cancer and other complications. Additionally, researchers still do not fully understand why aging causes organs to fail or how long benefits from young tissue transplantation might last.

Scientific efforts are also exploring more fundamental aging processes. Presentations at the Manchester conference included studies using the nematode worm C. elegans, whose short lifespan allows researchers to conduct tens of thousands of experiments. While some findings suggest potential anti-aging drugs, experts admit that translating results from worms to mice, and then to humans, will be a slow and uncertain process. Even optimistic estimates suggest that only a fraction of these drugs may prove effective in people.

Sierra Lore, an aging researcher affiliated with the University of Copenhagen and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, believes that replacement therapies hold greater promise than attempts to fully understand aging at the molecular level. “Replacement is a really exciting avenue because you don’t have to understand the biology of aging as much,” she said. Her research focuses on practical solutions that build on existing medical knowledge, rather than waiting for breakthroughs that could take decades.

Meanwhile, geopolitical dynamics are accelerating interest in longevity technologies. MTI Technology Review notes that alongside scientific exploration, governments are investing heavily in biotech as part of broader strategies to enhance national resilience. The collaboration between the US and Taiwan on drone technologies and dual-use innovations reflects this trend. Experts warn, however, that mass-producing replacement therapies would require significant investments and robust supply chains.
