Was Leonardo da Vinci’s Genius in His Genes? Scientists Are Trying to Find Out

Leonardo da Vinci, the famous artist and inventor from the Renaissance era, is known for masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, as well as his sketches of flying machines and scientific studies. Now, more than 500 years after his death, scientists are trying to understand whether his genius might have been linked to his DNA.

Although Leonardo had no known children, an international team of researchers has spent the past decade tracking down living male relatives from his father’s family line. Using historical records, they found 15 potential male descendants. Six of them agreed to DNA testing, and results showed they all shared the same Y chromosome — a piece of DNA passed almost unchanged from father to son.

This Y chromosome could help confirm whether bones buried in the Château d’Amboise in France, believed to be Leonardo’s, really are his. But researchers have an even bigger goal: to reconstruct Leonardo’s full genome, or DNA map. By doing so, they hope to discover whether certain genetic traits — like his extraordinary eyesight and creativity — were rooted in his biology.

Leonardo was known for his wide range of interests and talents. He studied anatomy, built mechanical designs, and explored nature in great detail. Some experts believe he had special visual abilities that allowed him to notice things others would miss — like the faint smile starting to appear on the Mona Lisa’s face or the quick movements of a dragonfly’s wings.

“We think he saw things that you and I can’t see,” said Jesse Ausubel, one of the researchers behind the Leonardo da Vinci DNA Project.

The findings so far have been published in a new book, Genia da Vinci, by Italian researchers Alessandro Vezzosi and Agnese Sabato. The project is also examining bones found in the Church of Santa Croce in Vinci, Leonardo’s hometown. These bones — believed to belong to his grandfather or half-brothers — are being tested to see if they match the living descendants’ DNA.

If a match is found, scientists could then test other samples, like skin cells that might still be on Leonardo’s old notebooks and manuscripts.

The researchers are also exploring Leonardo’s ancestry. New evidence suggests his mother, Caterina, may have been a slave from the Middle East, based on old property and legal records. This theory has been gaining support among historians.

Another part of the project involves a mysterious drawing discovered on a fireplace in Vinci. It shows a fantasy creature called the “Unicorn Dragon,” with wings, claws, and a horn. Some art historians think it could be one of Leonardo’s early sketches of imaginary animals.

The Leonardo da Vinci DNA Project began in 2016 and includes scientists from top institutions like Rockefeller University in New York, the J. Craig Venter Institute in California, and the University of Florence.

The research is still ongoing, but it could eventually offer a fascinating look at what made one of history’s greatest minds so unique.
