China’s new LY-1 laser platform is poised to become a gamechanger in naval warfare, according to recent analyses of its deployment and capabilities. A new animation highlights potential uses by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), including deployment on warships and coastal defense platforms built on artificial islands.
Unveiled in early September during Beijing’s Victory Day parade, the LY-1 works by targeting the optical sensors of enemy weapons and equipment — from UAVs and manned aircraft to anti-ship missiles — effectively disabling them. Analysts note that the system’s very large primary aperture beam director, coupled with smaller electro-optical and infrared sensors, allows for high accuracy targeting.
The system’s high-energy laser capability offers further strategic advantages: a low cost per shot and an effectively unlimited magazine, as long as sufficient power is available. Experts suggest this gives China a potent anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) tool, strengthening its ability to control the maritime space around its coastline.
The LY-1 comes as the U.S. continues implementing its Island Chain Strategy, conceived in the 1950s to contain China by threatening its coastal cities with missiles and naval assets stationed in neighboring countries. Observers say the laser platform could significantly complicate U.S. operations in the Western Pacific and shift the balance of naval power in the region.
