China has unveiled unmanned submersibles that now rank as the largest in the world, a development that has drawn intense international attention and heightened strategic concerns. Last year’s military parade showcased two models, HSU001 and AJX002, each approaching 20 metres in length, while satellite imagery analyzed by Western media revealed a classified variant exceeding 40 metres at a naval facility. As the South China Morning Post reports, these dimensions have created a new class of extra-extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicles (XXLUUVs), far surpassing the U.S.’s largest counterpart, the 15-metre “Orca,” and triggering warnings from defense analysts about vulnerabilities along America’s West Coast, including Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, and the Panama Canal.

The emergence of these XXLUUVs has sparked a debate about China’s maritime intentions. Yan Zheping, a leading authority on submersibles and director of unmanned systems at Harbin Engineering University, published research last month clarifying that the vessels’ strategic purpose focuses on regional security, coastal reconnaissance, and support for civilian research and environmental monitoring. According to Yan, these deep-sea giants are designed primarily to counter U.S. military operations in potential Taiwan Strait or South China Sea contingencies, rather than to launch long-range trans-Pacific strikes. Nonetheless, their sheer size and advanced capabilities have prompted reassessments of U.S. naval readiness and regional deterrence strategies.

China’s technological ambitions extend beyond the oceans into space. Duan Baoyan, a leading scientist behind China’s “Zhuri” space solar power initiative, has outlined the potential military applications of energy beamed from orbit, offering an unprecedented glimpse into dual-use technologies with strategic implications. As the South China Morning Post notes, Duan’s team has redesigned orbital solar infrastructure to not only deliver energy but also support communication, navigation, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and remote control functions. His work emphasizes the use of extremely narrow, precisely steerable microwave beams capable of transmitting energy across vast distances, a capability that could, in principle, facilitate targeted jamming or secure military communications.

Space-based solar power represents a fundamental shift in how China could sustain operations and project influence. Unlike terrestrial solar panels limited by weather and day-night cycles, orbiting systems can collect sunlight almost continuously. The energy harvested in orbit is converted into electricity and transmitted as microwave beams to receiving antennas on Earth. While these capabilities are promoted as civilian in nature, the military utility—ranging from powering remote facilities to enhancing electronic warfare—is clear, prompting analysts in the United States and other countries to reassess strategic vulnerabilities in both maritime and space domains.

The combination of enormous underwater drones and advanced orbital power systems illustrates Beijing’s integrated approach to next-generation warfare. As reported by the South China Morning Post, China’s leadership is pursuing technologies that blur the lines between civilian and military applications, allowing for dual-use advantages that can enhance strategic resilience while maintaining plausible deniability. For example, the XXLUUVs can conduct reconnaissance and coastal defense while supporting environmental monitoring, effectively embedding military capabilities within civilian frameworks.

U.S. defense analysts have responded with heightened concern, particularly given the potential for these unmanned systems to surveil or threaten critical infrastructure along the Pacific Coast. Some experts have warned that China’s deep-sea drones could compromise maritime security in strategic chokepoints, such as the Panama Canal, while providing unprecedented situational awareness along contested sea lanes. Similarly, space-based solar power, while providing continuous energy for civilian and industrial purposes, could be repurposed for precise electronic interference, potentially disrupting communication networks or guiding autonomous weapons systems.

Yan Zheping’s research emphasizes that these technologies are intended primarily for regional defense, yet their symbolic and operational scale cannot be overlooked. By demonstrating the ability to build XXLUUVs exceeding 40 metres in length and by investing in sophisticated orbital infrastructure, China is signaling both technological prowess and a willingness to challenge U.S. dominance in key strategic arenas. The South China Morning Post notes that these developments are likely to reshape regional military calculations, particularly in scenarios involving Taiwan, the South China Sea, or broader Indo-Pacific contingencies.

The convergence of maritime and space capabilities highlights China’s broader strategy of leveraging technological innovation to secure strategic advantage. Analysts point to the integration of unmanned systems, continuous space-based energy collection, and electronic warfare as a template for a new form of asymmetric deterrence, one that minimizes risk to human personnel while maximizing operational reach. In practical terms, this means that both underwater and orbital assets could be used to project power, gather intelligence, and influence the outcome of conflicts without engaging in traditional large-scale combat.
