Apple Inc. is planning to expand its manufacturing operations in Vietnam as part of a strategic push into the smart home market and an effort to reduce reliance on China. The company is developing new devices, including indoor security cameras, a smart home display, and a tabletop robot slated for 2027, all of which are expected to be produced in Vietnam, according to sources familiar with the plans. Bloomberg News previously reported on Apple’s efforts to diversify production away from China to mitigate supply chain risks and geopolitical tensions.
The expansion involves a partnership with Chinese firm BYD Co., which will handle final assembly, testing, and packaging of the home hub and the robot. Apple is also expected to increase iPad production with BYD in Vietnam, adding to its existing production of iPads, AirPods, Apple Watches, Macs, and older HomePods in the country. The move underscores Vietnam’s growing importance as a key manufacturing hub for Apple as the company seeks to balance global operations amid tariffs and other trade pressures.
Apple’s smart home devices include a roughly 7-inch home hub display, two versions of which have been developed: a tabletop model resembling a screen-equipped HomePod mini and a wall-mounted version. The devices will feature FaceTime cameras, adaptive software, and integration with an upgraded version of Siri planned for release in March 2026. Bloomberg reported last year that Apple began development of the software in 2023, aiming to enhance web search capabilities and control of home appliances.
The indoor security camera, code-named J450, is expected to launch by the end of next year, while the motorized tabletop robot with a 9-inch display is scheduled for release in 2027. Apple faces engineering challenges with the robotic components and is exploring AI applications for the devices, with pricing projected in the several-hundred-dollar range. The expansion reflects Apple’s broader strategy to diversify production while maintaining key supply chain partnerships in Asia.
