China Restores Lifeboat Safety for Tiangong Space Station

Hasty spacecraft deployment underscores the risks of human spaceflight as Beijing ensures taikonauts’ safety, Times UK reports

China faced a tense period for its crewed space programme as the Shenzhou-22 spacecraft was rapidly launched to serve as a lifeboat for the Tiangong space station, also known as the “Heavenly Palace,” according to Times UK. The mission came after the previous docked spacecraft, Shenzhou-20, was found to have a broken port-hole windscreen, leaving the three taikonauts aboard Tiangong temporarily without a fully operational emergency vehicle.

The Shenzhou-22 launch on Tuesday, followed by a successful docking four hours later, restored the standard safety protocol for the station, ensuring that astronauts could evacuate in the event of an emergency. The mission was completed just 16 days after being commissioned, ending an anxious 11-day period for the Shenzhou-21 crew, who had no safe lifeboat available while conducting their work in orbit.

Shenzhou-20 had delivered its crew to Tiangong in April and, under standard procedures, remained docked to act as an emergency escape vehicle and as the means to return the astronauts home once replacements arrived. The damage to Shenzhou-20, caused by space debris, was not publicly announced until the arrival of Shenzhou-21 on October 31. Its scheduled return on November 5 was postponed and then cancelled, and the crew ultimately returned to Earth on November 14 aboard Shenzhou-21. This left the station temporarily without a lifeboat until the uncrewed Shenzhou-22 arrived.

Shenzhou-22 was able to launch quickly because China maintains a backup spacecraft and rocket at its Jiuquan launch base in northern China. Among the supplies carried was a repair kit for Shenzhou-20’s damaged window, which the Shenzhou-21 crew will reinforce from the inside. The plan is for Shenzhou-20 to eventually return to Earth uncrewed, in line with international safety standards for damaged spacecraft.

The episode highlights the operational challenges of human spaceflight, a risk shared by other spacefaring nations. In the United States, a similar situation occurred last year when a Boeing Starliner experienced a damaged propulsion system after docking with the International Space Station. Some ISS crew had to remain on board for nine months while repairs and rotation missions were carried out, though the presence of lifeboats ensured safety for all astronauts.

China’s rapid response underscores the growing technical sophistication of its programme and its careful attention to astronaut safety as it continues to expand its orbital ambitions. The Shenzhou-22 mission restores the normal rotation of spacecraft at Tiangong and reinforces the importance of maintaining lifeboat readiness in human spaceflight operations.
