For the first time in recorded history, Earth’s average temperature has exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, marking a grim milestone in the ongoing climate crisis. According to data analyzed by multiple global organizations and reported by Nature, this breach occurred in 2024 and underscores the urgent need for action to combat global warming.
While the 1.5°C threshold has been crossed for only one year so far, researchers warn it signals humanity is nearing the limits of what was once considered a “safe zone” for the planet. The global average temperature in 2024 was measured at 1.55°C above the 1850–1900 baseline, a statistically significant jump from 2023’s record-setting heat.
“It’s both a physical reality and a symbolic shock,” said Gail Whiteman, a climate risk expert at the University of Exeter. Nature highlights that this breach reflects not just a short-term anomaly but possibly an acceleration of global warming.
This development comes nearly a decade after the Paris Agreement set a target to limit warming to 1.5°C to prevent the most catastrophic effects of climate change. Despite widespread adoption of renewable energy, carbon emissions from fossil fuels reached record highs last year, delaying progress toward this goal.
In a statement responding to the breach, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed, “Individual years pushing past the 1.5-degree limit do not mean the long-term goal is shot. It means we need to fight even harder to get on track. Leaders must act—now.”
The report emphasizes that while the 1.5°C limit is a political target, not a strict scientific tipping point, surpassing it even temporarily has severe implications. Higher temperatures amplify extreme weather, ecosystem collapse, sea-level rise, and the intensity of wildfires and storms.
Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist for the Nature Conservancy, explained to Nature that most of the heat from greenhouse gases is stored in Earth’s oceans, land, and ice. This means that even a temporary breach in air temperature reflects a dangerous accumulation of trapped heat with long-term consequences.
The breach has sparked concern that it may encourage complacency rather than action. As Carlos Nobre, a climate scientist at the University of São Paulo, noted, some skeptics might dismiss the news, arguing that humanity has crossed the line with no immediate consequences. However, experts like Whiteman caution against such thinking, warning that extreme weather events, rising seas, and other impacts will only worsen unless emissions are curtailed rapidly.
With the next UN climate summit set to take place in Brazil, Nature reports that this breach should serve as a critical wake-up call. Whether the world heeds it or not remains to be seen, but one message is clear: the time to act is now.
