Melania Trump has come under renewed scrutiny after newly released Justice Department records revealed friendly email exchanges between the future first lady and Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The documents, made public on Friday as part of a massive disclosure from the Epstein investigation, shed light on social connections dating back to the early 2000s.

Among the records is an email sent by Melania Trump to Maxwell in 2002, in which she praised a New York Magazine article about Epstein and complimented Maxwell’s appearance in the accompanying photograph. Addressed simply to “G” and signed “Love, Melania,” the message read: “Nice story about JE in NY mag. You look great on the picture.” The email was written years before Epstein’s criminal activities became widely known and long before Maxwell was later convicted of sex trafficking.

The correspondence was included in nearly three million documents released by the US Justice Department on January 30. Maxwell, a British former socialite, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in facilitating Epstein’s abuse of underage girls. The newly surfaced email highlights the social familiarity between Maxwell and Melania Trump during a period when Epstein moved comfortably among wealthy and powerful circles.

In a follow-up message, Melania Trump expressed a desire to meet Maxwell, referencing travel to Palm Beach and New York. “I know you are very busy flying all over the world. How was Palm Beach? I cannot wait to go down. Give me a call when you are back in NY,” she wrote, closing again with “Love, Melania.” Maxwell responded warmly, calling her “sweet pea” and explaining that shifting travel plans made a meeting difficult at that time.

Photographs from the early 2000s show Melania Trump and Maxwell together on at least three occasions, and Melania has also been pictured with Epstein at least once alongside Donald Trump. The email exchange dates to October 23, shortly after Epstein was featured in the New York Magazine profile that included comments from Donald Trump, who at the time described Epstein as a “terrific guy” and “a lot of fun to be with.”

Trump’s remarks in that profile, later widely scrutinised, included comments about Epstein’s social life and his fondness for young women. While neither Melania Trump nor Donald Trump has been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein’s crimes, the release of the emails adds to the growing public record of how closely Epstein and Maxwell were embedded in elite social networks.

As further files continue to emerge, the revelations are prompting renewed debate over the extent of Epstein’s connections and the many prominent figures who interacted with him before his downfall, underscoring how long his influence went unquestioned in high society.
