New research suggests that the world could breach the 1.5C global warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement much sooner than previously anticipated, unless more stringent emissions cuts are implemented. Two studies published in Nature indicate that the breach of the Paris accord’s temperature limits could occur within the next two decades, with projections now pointing to a possible breach as early as 2024.
Emanuele Bevacqua from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, lead author of one study, emphasized the urgency of cutting emissions to reduce the likelihood of breaching the 1.5C limit. The findings underscore how crucial it is to take immediate action, as “cutting emissions has never been more important,” Bevacqua said. Initially, the Paris Agreement, signed by almost 200 countries in 2015, projected the world would reach the 1.5C mark by March 2045. However, this estimate has shifted over time, with recent studies suggesting it could occur around 2030-2034.
The second study, led by Alex Cannon at Environment and Climate Change Canada, found that if global temperatures remain above 1.5C for 18 consecutive months, the breach of the Paris Agreement’s lower limit would become “virtually certain.” This aligns with the data from the EU’s Copernicus climate service, which reported that January 2025 saw temperatures 1.75C above pre-industrial levels, continuing a trend of elevated temperatures.
Experts warn that the increasing temperatures are already driving extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and potential ice sheet damage, especially if the 1.5C limit is surpassed. While the immediate impacts may not yet be fully realized, experts caution that each fraction of a degree of warming has significant consequences, particularly between the 1.5C and 2C thresholds.
As the world continues to warm, scientists agree that urgent climate action is necessary to curb further damage and prevent an irreversible breach of the Paris Agreement’s goals. Without significant emission reductions, the planet is on track for rising seas and escalating climate risks.
