NASA Spots “Leopard Spot” Patterns on Mars That Could Hint at Past Life

NASA has revealed new details from Mars that could provide tantalizing clues about the planet’s potential for life. Scientists studying clay-rich rocks on the edge of Jezero Crater—the site of an ancient Martian lake explored by the Perseverance Rover—have identified unusual “leopard spot” patterns that resemble traces left behind by microorganisms on Earth.

“These patterns are intriguing because they echo microbial formations we see on our planet,” Seán Jordan, an Associate Professor in Chemistry at Dublin City University, told The Independent UK. “While it’s too early to claim evidence of life, these findings make Jezero Crater an exciting focus for future investigations.”

Jezero Crater, once fed by Martian rivers, offers a window into a time when Mars had a thicker atmosphere, liquid water, and a magnetic field—conditions similar to early Earth that supported the emergence of life. However, as the Martian core cooled, the planet lost its magnetic field, leaving the surface exposed to radiation and colder, drier conditions, making life on the surface today unlikely.

Scientists now believe that any surviving life is most likely hidden underground or beneath ice sheets, where conditions may be more stable. The Martian subsurface, extending from a few metres to several kilometres deep, could offer habitats analogous to Earth’s deep biosphere, where microbes survive in rock fractures and generate energy through chemical reactions with minerals. Methane detected on Mars may hint at such activity, though non-biological sources are also possible.

Researchers are also studying extreme environments on Earth—so-called Mars analogues—such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, sediments at Lake Salda in Turkey, and the Pilot Valley salts in Utah. These sites provide insight into how life might survive in Mars-like conditions. Laboratory experiments using specialized “Mars chambers” replicate Martian atmospheres, radiation, and temperature to further test hypotheses.

Looking ahead, the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover, slated for launch in 2028, will drill up to two metres below the Martian surface to investigate potential microbial life in the shallow subsurface. Scientists caution that most life, if it exists today, may be much deeper underground, presenting significant technical challenges for future missions.

“Finding life on Mars is no simple task,” Jordan said. “We’re at the beginning of understanding where and how it might survive. But each discovery, like the leopard spots at Jezero, brings us closer to answering one of humanity’s most profound questions: Are we alone in the universe?”
