A catastrophic maritime incident unfolded on March 10 in the North Sea as the U.S.-registered oil tanker MV Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel MV Solong collided off the coast of East Yorkshire. The collision led to significant fires on both vessels, raising alarms about potential environmental hazards.
The MV Stena Immaculate, transporting approximately 18,000 tonnes of jet fuel for the U.S. military, was anchored near Withernsea when the MV Solong, en route from Grangemouth, Scotland, to Rotterdam, Netherlands, collided with it. Preliminary reports suggest that dense fog in the area may have contributed to the incident.
The collision resulted in multiple explosions aboard the Stena Immaculate, prompting both crews to abandon their ships. A large-scale rescue operation ensued, involving helicopters, lifeboats, and over 20 rescue and firefighting vessels. Out of the combined 37 crew members, 36 were rescued, with one sailor from the Solong still missing and now presumed dead.
The incident has sparked fears of a major environmental disaster. While initial concerns centered on the potential release of sodium cyanide from the Solong, the ship’s owners have clarified that it was not carrying the toxic chemical at the time of the collision. Norwegian firefighters and specialist pollution control vessels have arrived at the scene to assist in firefighting and containment efforts. The structural integrity of the Solong is compromised, with officials warning that it could sink within hours.

Factors under consideration include the possibility of the tanker being moored in the wrong shipping lane or an autopilot failure on the cargo ship.
