Spain has recorded its highest estimated number of heat-related deaths since the country’s Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) began operating in 2015, with 5,232 deaths linked to high temperatures between May 15 and August 31.
The figure reflects the intensity of the heat experienced across Spain during the summer of 2026 and comes amid a broader trend of rising temperatures and heat waves across Europe. The record is expected to prompt further discussion over climate policies and public health measures, while factors including air pollution, socioeconomic conditions and access to healthcare remain relevant to the impact of extreme temperatures.
MoMo uses statistical models that cross-reference daily registered deaths with thermal thresholds to estimate how many deaths can be attributed to heat during each season. The system provides a means of monitoring heat-related mortality and identifying trends that can inform responses to future heat waves.
The 2026 estimate has surpassed previous peaks recorded by the monitoring system. In 2022, MoMo counted 4,789 heat-related deaths, while the figure fell to 3,035 in 2023. Those figures had previously represented the deadliest summers recorded by the system.
The distribution of deaths during the current summer also illustrates the scale of the increase. July registered 2,025 deaths attributed to extreme temperatures, while August recorded 2,147 deaths up to the date of the report, making it the deadliest of the two months.
Older people were overwhelmingly affected. Of the estimated 5,232 victims, 5,048, or 96.4 per cent, were over 65 years old. Within that group, 3,256 deaths involved people over 85, representing about 62 per cent of the total estimate. Women accounted for 60 per cent of the deaths.
The figures highlight the particular vulnerability of older people during periods of extreme heat, particularly among those with pre-existing health conditions. The scale of mortality has reinforced calls for targeted preventive measures and specialised care for older adults during heat waves.
The 2026 figure remains below the estimated toll from the 2003 heat episode, when calculations at the time put the number of deaths in Spain at about 13,000. However, the current figure is already the highest recorded by MoMo since the system began in 2015.
The August figure remains provisional and could be revised when the monitoring system completes its records for the month. The final total may therefore change, although the estimated mortality for the period has already established a new record within the MoMo monitoring period.
The threat has also extended towards the beginning of September. A forecast cited in the source material warned that Spain would begin the month with a heat wave, with several capitals potentially exceeding 40°C (104°F) from Sunday.
With temperatures remaining high, several local administrations have expanded teleassistance and direct monitoring of dependent populations. Public health responses have increasingly focused on preparing communities for extreme weather, including cooling centres, water distribution and timely health alerts for vulnerable people.

The record number of deaths has placed particular focus on ensuring that vulnerable populations can be identified, monitored and protected as extreme temperatures become an increasingly significant public health challenge.
