As artificial intelligence spreads deeper into daily life, anger over data centers, automation, and corporate power is fueling a surge in threats, sabotage, and fears of political violence across the United States and beyond.

Public resistance to artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving from online outrage into a more volatile and confrontational movement, with growing numbers of threats, acts of intimidation, and attacks targeting individuals and institutions associated with the expansion of AI technology. What was once largely confined to ethical debates and academic warnings is increasingly manifesting as a broader political and social backlash driven by fears of economic displacement, environmental degradation, and the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a small number of technology companies.

According to analysis from The Soufan Center, online monitoring of anti-AI communities has revealed a sharp increase in hostility toward corporations, policymakers, and developers connected to artificial intelligence and the data centers powering the industry. Researchers found that much of the rhetoric centers on accusations that governments and corporations are ignoring the human consequences of rapid AI integration while making decisions with little public accountability or democratic oversight.

The growing hostility has become especially visible in disputes surrounding the construction of large-scale data centers, which have emerged as symbols of AI’s expanding physical footprint. Across the United States and internationally, proposed data center projects have ignited fierce opposition from local residents worried about environmental damage, rising electricity costs, water consumption, noise pollution, and limited economic benefits for surrounding communities.

While most activism remains peaceful, analysts warn that violent rhetoric online has become increasingly common. Threats against data centers themselves remain the most frequently observed form of extremist language, but attention is also shifting toward public officials and technology executives viewed as responsible for accelerating AI adoption.

The issue gained national attention in April after two violent incidents in the United States highlighted the emerging threat environment. On April 6, Indianapolis councilman Ron Gibson became the target of a shooting attack after previously supporting a proposed data center development in a residential neighborhood. According to reports, 13 bullets were fired into his home overnight alongside a message reading “no data centers,” signaling a direct connection between local infrastructure disputes and escalating anti-AI anger.

Only days later, Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI and one of the world’s most recognizable AI figures, became the target of an attempted attack. Authorities say a 20-year-old man from Texas threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence before attempting to enter OpenAI headquarters while allegedly threatening to kill those inside. Investigators later recovered a manifesto reportedly advocating the assassination of AI company executives and investors while listing what were described as their addresses.

Law enforcement officials examining the suspect’s online activity found evidence of a gradual radicalization process. According to reports, the individual initially expressed concerns about AI safety before increasingly embracing beliefs that artificial intelligence posed an existential threat to humanity. Eventually, those views escalated into support for violent action and martyrdom. Though support for the attacker online remained limited, analysts noted parallels with digital reactions that followed the 2024 killing of the UnitedHealthcare chief executive, where small but vocal communities celebrated acts of violence against corporate figures.

The suspect had reportedly participated in online groups advocating a temporary pause in AI development until stronger safety guarantees could be established. However, those organizations swiftly condemned the attack and publicly rejected violence as a legitimate form of resistance. The response highlighted a growing divide within anti-AI activism between reform-oriented critics seeking regulation and fringe actors increasingly willing to endorse sabotage or political violence.
Much of the broader anti-AI sentiment appears rooted in economic anxiety. Online discussions frequently focus on fears that AI technologies will accelerate automation, eliminate jobs, and further concentrate wealth among a narrow elite of technology investors and executives. Critics also argue that decisions surrounding AI infrastructure projects are being made without meaningful public consultation, particularly at the local level where communities often feel powerless against large corporations and political interests.

Environmental concerns have become another major driver of opposition. Data centers require vast amounts of electricity and water to support high-performance computing systems, leading residents in many regions to worry about rising utility bills, strained infrastructure, and ecological damage. In communities already facing economic stress, data centers are increasingly viewed not as engines of growth but as disruptive industrial projects offering limited direct benefits.

Researchers warn that these grievances could create conditions conducive to further unrest. In a recent study published in CTC Sentinel at West Point, analyst Yannick Veilleux-Lepage argued that artificial intelligence is reshaping social conditions in ways historically associated with political violence. He suggested that the rapid pace of AI adoption, combined with what he describes as an “accountability gap” in AI decision-making systems, may intensify public frustration and contribute to radicalization.

Veilleux-Lepage also warned that as major technology executives strengthen their personal security, anger could increasingly shift toward more accessible targets such as local officials responsible for approving data center construction. That pattern, according to researchers, is already beginning to emerge. The Soufan Center’s monitoring found some of the most aggressive rhetoric directed not only at corporations but also at city council members, county officials, and local regulators involved in permitting decisions.

The United States has become a key battleground for these tensions because opposition to data centers has largely developed as a local political issue with limited federal coordination or national policy guidance. Analysts expect local elections to become increasingly contentious as anti-data center activists organize campaigns against candidates supporting new AI infrastructure projects.
A report by research firm Data Center Watch estimated that by the end of 2025, hundreds of local opposition groups were active across 42 American states. The report noted a sharp acceleration in organizing activity during the latter half of the year as communities shared stories online about pollution concerns, escalating electricity costs, constant industrial noise, and disappointment over the relatively small number of permanent jobs created by many data center projects.

That resistance is no longer confined to the United States. International opposition to AI infrastructure is also growing as governments and corporations race to expand computing capacity worldwide. In February 2026, residents in Malaysia staged the country’s first protest against a data center construction project, citing environmental and public health concerns. In Spain’s Aragon region, large-scale data center developments involving major American technology firms have triggered legal challenges and sustained local opposition campaigns.

Similar disputes have emerged in Finland, France, Chile, and the Netherlands, where anger is often directed less at foreign technology companies than at domestic political leaders accused of prioritizing corporate interests over local communities. Analysts say this reflects a deeper crisis of institutional trust in which citizens increasingly believe governments are failing to protect public interests in the face of rapid technological transformation.

Global conflicts have also intensified scrutiny of AI systems. The wars in Gaza and Iran have sparked debate over the use of artificial intelligence in military targeting, intelligence analysis, and autonomous weapons systems. At the same time, the Iran conflict exposed how strategically important data centers in the Persian Gulf could become vulnerable targets during geopolitical crises.

For now, most anti-AI activism remains nonviolent. Yet researchers warn that the scale of resistance may grow significantly as AI becomes more deeply embedded in the global economy and automation increasingly affects employment and social stability. What is emerging is not simply a technological debate, but a widening political struggle over power, inequality, and who bears the cost of the digital future.
