Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Ambassador Olha Stefanishyna from her post in Washington as part of a broader reshuffle of senior government and diplomatic positions. While Stefanishyna described her departure as a personal decision, the move comes amid domestic media scrutiny and at a time when Ukraine’s relationship with the United States remains central to its defence and security strategy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the country’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, ending her tenure in Washington through a presidential decree published on Monday.
Stefanishyna had served as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States for nearly a year, having been appointed to the role in July last year. Her departure had been widely anticipated for several weeks and forms part of a broader reshuffle of senior Ukrainian officials and diplomatic appointments.
The change follows a series of recent personnel changes within the Ukrainian government, including the replacement of the prime minister and defence minister. Further changes to Ukraine’s diplomatic corps are also expected as the government continues to reorganise key leadership positions.
Despite the presidential decree formally dismissing her, Stefanishyna maintained that leaving the post had been her own decision. In a message published on Facebook, she said her departure was “my own decision, driven by personal circumstances” and expressed pride in her achievements during her time in Washington.
Describing the appointment as “the greatest honour” of her life, Stefanishyna said her mission had helped preserve vital support from the United States during a politically challenging period.
“We increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support precisely when the political climate in Washington was shifting against us,” she wrote.
Last week, Ukraine’s Suspilne public broadcaster quoted Stefanishyna as telling reporters in Washington that President Zelensky had not requested her resignation. She also indicated that she would respond to further questions surrounding her departure and issues that had been raised in media reports.
According to Ukrainian media, Stefanishyna informed the president last month of her intention to leave the post. The reports also referred to long-running investigations into alleged irregularities relating to her asset declarations, an issue that has received sustained attention in domestic media.
Before becoming ambassador, Stefanishyna served as Ukraine’s deputy prime minister and justice minister, making her one of the country’s most senior political figures before assuming the diplomatic role in Washington.
The position of ambassador to the United States remains one of Ukraine’s most strategically important diplomatic appointments. Kyiv continues to rely heavily on US military assistance and intelligence-sharing as it prosecutes its war against Russia, making relations with Washington central to Ukraine’s national security.
Those relations have experienced periods of tension under US President Donald Trump, with interactions between Trump and Zelensky at times proving strained. More recently, however, Trump has adopted a more encouraging tone towards the Ukrainian leader.
Zelensky has not announced who will succeed Stefanishyna as Ukraine’s ambassador in Washington. The appointment is expected to form part of the wider diplomatic reshuffle currently under way as Kyiv seeks to reinforce its international engagement during the continuing conflict with Russia.
