Pope Francis continues his recovery from double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, as speculation about his health, potential resignation, and the possibility of a conclave intensifies.
The Vatican reported that the 88-year-old pontiff slept well and remains under close medical supervision. Doctors noted a slight improvement in his condition, with recent blood tests and a CT scan indicating a positive evolution of his lung infection. Additionally, the kidney insufficiency detected earlier has subsided.
Despite these encouraging updates, his prognosis remains uncertain. Francis, who had part of one lung removed in his youth, continues to receive supplemental oxygen and respiratory physiotherapy. However, the Vatican confirmed he has not experienced any respiratory crises since Saturday.
Around the world, prayers for his health continue. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals, has led nightly Rosary prayers in St. Peter’s Square, calling for Francis’ swift recovery.
Re would play a crucial role in any potential papal transition, presiding over a conclave in the event of Francis’ passing. The Oscar-nominated film Conclave has drawn attention to the secretive process of electing a new pope, highlighting Re’s responsibilities.
Pope Francis has remained active despite his hospitalization. On Wednesday, he appointed four new bishops and approved the creation of a new fundraising initiative for the Holy See. His ongoing governance suggests he remains in command of the Church’s affairs, even from his hospital bed.
In recent days, Francis has also enacted significant decisions, including granting governing powers to the first-ever nun to lead the Vatican City State. Additionally, he scheduled a future meeting of cardinals to finalize dates for upcoming canonizations. While a routine step in the saint-making process, this move has prompted speculation due to historical parallels—Pope Benedict XVI famously announced his resignation at a similar gathering in 2013.
Despite swirling rumors, there is no official indication that Francis is considering resignation. Supporters continue to rally outside the hospital, and on Wednesday evening, musicians performed Schubert’s Ave Maria outside his window as a tribute.
“This is not just a song; it is a prayer for the pope,” said singer Davide Capuano. “These are difficult days, and I hope the whole world can pray together with us.”
