Amazon’s Project Kuiper Launches First Satellites in Race Against Starlink

Critical Milestone for Tech Giant's Space Ambitions

Amazon has launched the first batch of satellites for its ambitious Project Kuiper, marking a critical step in its attempt to build a global broadband internet network to rival Elon Musk’s Starlink. According to a report by the Financial Times, the 27 Kuiper satellites were carried into orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket that blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Monday.

The successful deployment represents a significant milestone for the Seattle-based conglomerate as it races to establish a constellation of 3,200 satellites in low Earth orbit. This comes at a pivotal time, with many governments and businesses actively seeking alternatives to Starlink amid geopolitical concerns and Musk’s increasingly controversial political positions.

“Kuiper is the next big heavyweight to enter the arena,” said Caleb Henry, an analyst at Quilty Space, in remarks to the Financial Times. “The goal now is to really begin to crank things up — launch regularly and quickly enough to start a service.”

Amazon Chief Executive Andy Jassy has identified Kuiper as part of a broader effort to find a “fourth pillar” of business growth alongside Amazon Web Services, e-commerce, and its Prime subscription service. Project Kuiper sits among several major, capital-intensive bets the company is making, which also include ventures into healthcare, self-driving technologies, and artificial intelligence.

Amazon plans to target the same retail, business, and government customers that Starlink currently serves. Although specific service details remain under wraps, Jassy has indicated Kuiper could eventually connect between 300 million and 400 million customers worldwide, with the company aiming to launch service by the end of the year.

However, progress has not been without setbacks. Production delays and weather-related launch cancellations have hampered Kuiper’s schedule. Prior to Monday’s successful deployment, Amazon had only managed to launch two prototype satellites. Meanwhile, Starlink has surged ahead, deploying more than 7,000 satellites since 2019 and now serving over 4.5 million customers globally.

Despite the gap, Project Kuiper has garnered strong support. Amazon has secured launch contracts with a variety of providers, including ULA, Europe’s Arianespace, Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, and even Musk’s own SpaceX.

Still, Kuiper faces a looming regulatory deadline: the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires Amazon to have half its satellite constellation in orbit by July 2025. Given ongoing delays, experts, including Henry, suggest that Amazon may have to seek an FCC waiver to avoid penalties.

“The writing was on the wall a long time ago that they would miss the target,” Henry told the Financial Times, adding that he expects the FCC to be flexible, as the rules were originally intended to prevent companies from hoarding orbital slots without deploying satellites.

“Amazon just needs to show that they’re very serious about getting their constellation launched,” Henry said.

As Amazon’s Kuiper project finally gains momentum, the competition for global satellite internet dominance is set to intensify.
