U.S. Adds More Powerful B61-13 Nuclear Bomb to Arsenal Ahead of Schedule

The United States has officially completed the first production unit of its newest nuclear gravity bomb, the B61-13, nearly a year ahead of schedule, according to a statement released today by the Department of Energy (DOE). The milestone marks a significant advancement in modernizing the country’s nuclear arsenal and enhancing its ability to strike hardened and expansive targets.

Based on the existing B61-12 design, the B61-13 features increased explosive yield and retains advanced guidance and safety technologies. Officials say the weapon is intended to replace the older B61-7 variant and bolster America’s deterrence capabilities, especially against fortified underground facilities and wide-area threats.

“[The] Pantex Plant has completed the first production unit of the B61-13 nuclear gravity bomb – designed to strengthen the flexibility and credibility of America’s nuclear deterrent,” the DOE said in a social media post, referring to the Texas-based facility responsible for nuclear weapon assembly and disassembly.

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright hailed the early completion as a major achievement. “This signals American strength to our adversaries and allies alike,” Wright said, adding that the rapid development reflects “the urgency we face to fortify deterrence in a volatile new age.”

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which manages U.S. nuclear weapons programs, attributed the accelerated timeline to efficiencies gained from leveraging existing B61 production infrastructure. “Decades of B61 design and qualification data” allowed engineers to streamline the review process and begin manufacturing within just three months of receiving congressional authorization, according to the NNSA.

Externally, the B61-13 closely resembles the B61-12, sharing its tail kit assembly and inertial navigation guidance system. However, it distinguishes itself with a significantly higher maximum yield—reportedly in the 340-360 kiloton range, similar to the B61-7—compared to the B61-12’s 50 kiloton cap.

While the B61-12 is designed for broader NATO deployment and can be carried by aircraft like the F-15E and F-35A, the B61-13 will be restricted to U.S. use. It is specifically intended for delivery by stealth bombers, namely the B-2 Spirit and the upcoming B-21 Raider.
