A groundbreaking study by the University of Oxford has revealed that great tits, much like humans, evolve their musical traditions over generations. Based on 100,000 recordings collected over three years from the great tits of Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, the research provides remarkable insights into how bird songs shift over time.

The findings suggest that songbird communities do not rigidly adhere to established melodies. Instead, their repertoires are constantly evolving, with older birds maintaining traditional tunes while younger generations introduce variations. This dynamic mirrors human musical trends, where different age groups gravitate toward distinct styles—comparable to a grandparent humming classic Beatles tunes while their grandchildren stream contemporary artists like Stormzy.

Tracking Song Evolution

To understand how great tit melodies change over time, researchers deployed an artificial intelligence system capable of recognizing individual birds by their unique songs. This technological advancement allowed them to analyze how age, movement, and population turnover influenced the development of the birds’ song culture.

One of the key findings was that birds of similar ages tended to sing more alike, while mixed-age populations exhibited greater musical diversity. When older birds passed away or migrated, their songs often vanished with them. However, newcomers did not introduce entirely new compositions. Instead, they adapted to the existing community by learning established tunes while adding their own subtle embellishments.

Cultural Learning in the Avian World

Dr. Nilo Merino Recalde, who led the study at Oxford, likened this process to human cultural learning, explaining: “Just as human communities develop distinct dialects and musical traditions, some birds have local song cultures that evolve over time. Our study shows how population dynamics shape this cultural learning process.”

Professor Ben Sheldon, also from Oxford, emphasized the significance of tracking individual birds over their lifetimes. “Our work shows that long-term monitoring allows us to understand how different processes interact in natural populations. It’s thrilling to think that the acoustic landscape we hear in the woods each spring is the result of cumulative individual movements and survival over many years.”
