The Russian Embassy in Colombo has responded to recent media reports claiming that young men from Jaffna were allegedly forced to participate in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict while attempting to travel to France and Belgium. In a statement issued today, the Embassy strongly refuted these claims, labeling them as “groundless” and emphasizing that the Russian authorities maintain a respectful approach towards all foreign nationals in Russia.

The Embassy expressed concern over the unverified nature of these reports, highlighting that such information could be part of a broader attempt to discredit the longstanding and friendly relations between Russia and Sri Lanka. “We are closely monitoring any unverified data, which appears to be aimed at undermining the traditional ties between our two nations,” the statement read.

The Russian Embassy also clarified that it offers employment opportunities to foreigners in Russia based on their personal choices, qualifications, and available vacancies. However, it pointed out that the management of issues concerning Sri Lankan citizens in Russia falls under the jurisdiction of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Moscow.

The Embassy further noted that it had not received any official reports regarding Sri Lankan citizens being sent to Russia by local travel agencies with ill intentions. “We are ready to assist in investigating any such activities, should we receive a formal request from the Sri Lankan authorities,” the statement concluded.
