Chinese Army Unveil ‘Super’ X-Rail Gun to Double Firepower of Navy’s Electromagnetic Weapon

If successful, the X-rail gun could usher in a new era of ultra-fast, long-range, non-explosive weaponry — an arms race not of gunpowder, but of electrons.

Chinese military researchers have announced a radical new rail gun design that could dramatically boost the destructive power of electromagnetic weapons, potentially redefining future warfare. Dubbed the “X-rail gun,” the experimental system aims to double the kinetic force of current models by merging two rail guns into a single, stacked configuration.

The new concept comes from a team led by Professor Lyu Qingao of the Army Engineering University of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Shijiazhuang. Their findings were detailed in an April paper published in the Journal of Army Engineering University of PLA.

Doubling Firepower with an X-Shaped Armature

The innovation centers on a unique X-shaped dual-armature system, in which two electromagnetic rail guns are mounted vertically within a single bore. Each armature — the component that carries the projectile — is powered by its own independent electromagnetic circuit. Together, they operate in parallel to launch a single projectile at unprecedented speed and force.

“Vertical fields ignore each other,” the researchers explained, allowing the system to avoid electromagnetic interference between the two firing circuits. According to the team, this architecture could allow the new weapon to fire 30kg shells at speeds up to Mach 7, with a long-term goal of launching 60kg projectiles at Mach 7.2, reaching targets as far as 400 kilometers (248 miles) away in under six minutes.

A Leap Beyond the Navy’s Pioneering Rail Gun

China’s navy shocked military analysts in 2018 when it became the first in the world to mount an electromagnetic rail gun on a warship. While the breakthrough was historic, the system faced significant limitations. The weapon’s current shell cap of 15 kilograms proved insufficient for combat scenarios such as disabling large naval vessels.

High current loads often melted the aluminum armature, while magnetic fields damaged internal components — significantly reducing projectile velocity. Despite solving major power supply issues, the Navy’s rail gun “still falls far short of the targets,” according to Lyu’s team.

Technical Challenges Ahead

While the X-rail gun design offers a potential breakthrough using “proven technology,” the concept remains theoretical. Live-fire testing has not yet been conducted, and challenges remain — particularly the so-called proximity effect, where the two perpendicular current circuits may create subtle disturbances in power distribution within conductors.

Still, the researchers filed a Chinese patent for their design last year, signaling serious intent to bring the project closer to deployment.

Global Rail Gun Race: China Charges Ahead

The X-rail gun development comes at a time when the United States has halted its rail gun program, citing cost and practicality issues. Japan, meanwhile, is testing a small-scale prototype that fires 300-gram shells from a ship-mounted system.

China’s persistent advancements — from naval demonstrations to army-led reengineering — now position it as the frontrunner in the global race to weaponize electromagnetic propulsion. Should the X-rail gun achieve live-fire viability, it would represent a generational leap in kinetic strike capabilities, offering silent, hypersonic, high-precision firepower without the need for explosive payloads.

Lyu and his team remain optimistic: “This design offers a path forward for high-power electromagnetic weapons using scalable, existing technology.”
