Hidden “kill switches” embedded in Chinese-made solar power equipment have been discovered in US solar farms, raising fears that Beijing could remotely disrupt critical electricity infrastructure in the event of escalating tensions between China and the West. This alarming revelation, first reported by The Times UK and Reuters, highlights growing concerns over China’s covert presence in Western energy networks.
The rogue devices, including concealed cellular radios, were found in power inverters—key components that connect solar panels and wind turbines to electricity grids—not only in the US but also across Europe, including the UK. These hidden communications modules could be activated remotely to disable inverters, potentially causing widespread blackouts with catastrophic consequences.
Over the past nine months, US security experts uncovered these suspect devices during detailed inspections of Chinese equipment from multiple suppliers. Though inverters are designed for remote access via cellular networks to aid maintenance, the malicious components found were not disclosed in product documentation, allowing them to bypass firewalls and security measures routinely used by utility companies.
One source told Reuters, “That effectively means there is a built-in way to physically destroy the grid.” In November, a notable security incident occurred when US solar inverters were disabled remotely from China, though the extent of damage remains unclear.
China’s strategic dominance in manufacturing essential parts for renewable energy infrastructure is a growing national security concern. Chinese law mandates cooperation between companies and intelligence agencies, giving Beijing potential control over equipment installed in critical Western infrastructure.
Mike Rogers, former director of the US National Security Agency, warned that China views Western energy grids as vulnerable targets and is betting on the widespread use of Chinese-made inverters to limit the West’s options for securing its infrastructure.
Huawei, the world’s largest inverter supplier and a company already banned from US telecom networks on national security grounds, exemplifies the risks. British and European authorities are also reviewing the security implications of Chinese technology in their renewable energy sectors.
Philipp Schröder, CEO of German solar developer 1Komma5, said, “Ten years ago, switching off Chinese inverters wouldn’t have caused dramatic effects on European grids. Now, with much larger renewables capacity, the risk is much greater.” Schröder’s company avoids Huawei equipment due to these concerns.
US lawmakers have called for urgent reassessments of supply chain vulnerabilities. Republican Congressman August Pfluger declared, “The threat we face from the Chinese Communist Party is real and growing. Whether it’s telecom hacks or remotely accessing solar and battery inverters, the CCP stops at nothing to target our sensitive infrastructure.”
The issue of Chinese espionage and sabotage has gained renewed attention following incidents like the 2023 Chinese spy balloon over North America. However, disentangling the world’s two largest economies remains challenging, as Washington debates tighter restrictions and new legislation aimed at safeguarding critical technology, such as the recently introduced Chip Security Act.
A spokesperson for China’s embassy in Washington dismissed the allegations, stating: “We oppose the generalisation of the concept of national security, distorting and smearing China’s infrastructure achievements.”
